I'm a big fan of Ishant Sharma but I'm disappointed the top knot has gone. He's rocking a much more closely cropped cut.
Up he goes with a big appeal for lbw against Root but it's turned down.
Too high perhaps?

That's tough for England because it is a real change of gear. In county cricket you are not looking to bat 150-160 overs, you are out there playing a few shots and getting on with the game.

England will want to bat past tea tomorrow.

It's early. We'll let Will off. Let's be honest, you could tell me it was still October and I'd probably believe you. The months don't mean anything anymore.
Ashwin switches to round the wicket to Sibley and immediately causes problems. One ball beats the edge and another is slipped dangerously close to short leg.

Mr Starr: I’m worried about Will Yates of 07:07. I woke up on a damp February morning to see an England opener getting himself out to a silly shot.
Shane O'Neill: Does someone want to inform Will Yates it's actually February?
Sibley 29, Root 11
Andy says painstaking. I say glorious.
Sibley batted for 556 minutes for his 120 runs in the hundred he mentions. That'd be lovely today.
He takes a single from Ishant's over.

This is only the second time that Dom Sibley has lasted over 100 balls in the first innings of a Test. The other was when he made a painstaking 120 against West Indies at Old Trafford. Since then his first innings scores have been 0, 8, 32, 22, 4 and 0 before this start.
He averages 25 in first innings and 59 in second innings.
Virat Kohli is having a chat with Joe Root while the England skipper stands at the non-striker's end. There's a lot of mutual respect between those two - two of the best players in the world.
I wonder what Virat is saying. Parenting tips, perhaps?

Joe Root just needs to get himself comfortable. He's just misread a couple but it is going to be so crucial for England for him to get a big score on a good, flat pitch.
A change of bowling. Ishant Sharma replaces Jasprit Bumrah.
Ishant bowled five overs 0-8 earlier.

Will Yates: At a time of such uncertainty, there's something hugely reassuring about waking up on a damp January morning to find that an England opener has got himself out playing a silly shot to a spinner on the first morning of a Test match halfway across the world.
Sibley 28, Root 11
Be careful there, Joe!
Ashwin, an absolute master of his craft, tempts the England skipper into an ill-advised nibble. The India fielders respond by upping the chatter.
Root comes down the pitch a ball later and awkwardly shews the ball into the off side. A great battle.

This is what Dom Sibley does and it is what England want him to do. That's the point.
They'd like him to score a bit quicker if possible but they want him to wear the opposition down.
Sibley 28, Root 11
We've just seen another replay of that hideous Rory Burns dismissal. He didn't even hang around to see the catch be taken. The England opener had already turned for the dressing room as the ball looped up in the air. He knew.
We're back live and Bumrah is trying to sneak the ball onto Root's pads. The England skipper has it covered, adding a two and then a three.
Just waking up? Where have you been?
Let us give you a quick recap.
England captain Joe Root, playing in his 100th Test, won the toss and chose to bat. It was easy going for England in the first hour and a half as Rory Burns and Dom Sibley patiently put on 63 without loss.
Unfortunately, Burns fell in ugly fashion playing a reverse sweep which looped to the keeper before Dan Lawrence was pinned in front for a five-ball duck by Jasprit Bumrah.
Which brings us to now - Root and Sibley at the crease, and England hoping to get back to attritional, fuss-free and wicketless cricket.

Ashwin rips the ball from one hand to the other with enough to force to start a small motor.
Good from Sibley who gets forward and tucks the ball away for a couple. Calm, safe batting. That's what is needed.
Congrats George! What name have you gone for? Dom? Jasprit?

Jimmy Anderson will be pleased to see Bumrah finding a bit of movement with this 30-over old ball. There was no swing with the new ball.
Joe Root, however, wouldn't mind it if Bumrah stopped finding swing - for now at least.
A no-ball is the only way England add to their score in this over.

I spoke to a couple of people who are in Chennai and a couple of days ago the pitch had a lot more grass on it, but India asked for it to be taken off with James Anderson in mind. That's probably why they are playing three spinners too.
