India are rattling through the overs. They've got through 16 in this session already and there are only 17 left in the day.
The pitch is getting more and more red, from their soil, with every ball.

Ishant takes two wickets in two balls in final hour of day
Root hits 218 - his fifth double-century - before being trapped lbw

No doubt Buttler will be looking to get on it and get England to that 600 mark. It will be interesting to see when India do take the third new ball.
Lovely from Jos Buttler. Ashwin drops short twice and Buttler clubs him to the fence in dismissive style. He's not going to miss out on those.
These two have Mankading history too...
They are not taking the new ball yet. Ravichandran Ashwin will continue.

Joe Root, as we know, is playing in his 100th Test in the same country where he made his debut back in December 2012. It was in Nagpur nine years ago when we first saw a fresh-faced Joe making, what was at the time, a surprise first appearance.
It was the decisive game of the series and I remember on that tour Root was very much seen as the extra player on tour to gather experience, rather than being a genuine option to play.
I recall interviewing him earlier on in the trip and thinking well he seems very nice, but I can’t really see the point in talking to him as he didn’t seem likely to be involved.
But, as we know, he did debut in Nagpur and hasn’t looked back since. We had our own debutant on that tour with Indian batting legend Rahul Dravid making his first appearance on TMS.
It was extraordinary being around him and seeing at first hand the adulation he receives from his adoring Indian public.
Back-to-back maidens. There's a bit of chat and animation from the Indians now, those two wickets have potentially opened something up.
The third new ball is now available. Will they take it?

India have won six of their eight home Tests by an innings and the others by 203 runs and 10 wickets. Admittedly they weren't against the top-ranked opposition. Before this though they haven't played a home Test since November 2019.
Only three touring sides have won series in India 1987 so it is a long-standing difficulty. South Africa won a two-Test series in 2000, Australia won a four-Test series 2-1 in 2004 and then England's 2-1 victory late in 2012 so this has been one of the toughest places in the world to go.
A maiden from Ravichandran Ashwin. He's got through 47 overs now.
The third new ball is just one over away. Will India take it? Virat Kohli is in conversation with Ishant Sharma.

Dr Ben Ellis: Joe Root has to sort his conversion from 200 to 250. It’s starting to become a problem.
DH: Joe Root has an appalling record of converting 200s into 300s. Definitely a part of his game he needs to address!
Buttler 9, Bess 1
Better from Jos Buttler. He looked scratchy when he first got to the crease but twice he plays a couple of nice dabbed sweeps to keep the score ticking along.

Paul McCready: Can we take a minute to appreciate the names Root has gone past in terms of runs scored just this year? Waugh, Sobers, Boycott, KP, Gower and now Stewart? Some major names there! He’s definitely regained his place in the Fab Four!
Jos Buttler pinches the strike with a single down to long-on.
Joe Root did a lovely speech for Buttler, who is playing in his 50th Test. It's worth a watch below. From listening to it you could tell just how integral and how highly thought of Buttler is within the England camp.

Joe Root had been out there for two days. The way he got out could have happened at any time, just misjudging it a little bit. As much as people say pitches are flat and it's easy for batsmen, just one little second of losing concentration and it's all over
It was an amazing knock of concentration and technique.
Neither of the wicket deliveries did that much, but this pitch is definitely more today as Jos Buttler is beat between bat and pad by Shahbaz Nadeem.
Jos Buttler and Dom Bess just need to build a partnership here. Nothing changes. England still want to be batting at the end of the day.

Oscar Craven: Virat Kohli is an absolute gent. Sorts out Roots cramp and then first to shake his hand as he leaves the field for 218.

Joe Root: 218 from 377 balls, two sixes, 19 fours, 20th Test century and fifth double century.
Dom Bess is the new batter. He averages 25.5 in Test cricket so he's more than capable on building a partnership with Jos Buttler. It'll be interesting to see how Buttler plays this now.
When Joe Root was out, Virat Kohli was straight over to shake his hand by the way. Classy.

All that relaxing talk of batting out the day and ending up on 600, they've lost two very quick wickets. Root went up very quickly for the DRS so I did wonder if he got a little feather on it.
Root lbw b Nadeem 218 (Eng 477-6)
Smashing into leg stump! That's a surprise.
What an innings from the England skipper though. Superb. Magnificent. Breathtaking. Whatever you want to say we can all agree it was very special.
He's become the first player to score 200+ in their 100th Test and it is his third 150-plus score in three Tests. A special player.
