Theo: There’s about a 1000/1 chance of India chasing these runs... so why on earth is Root so cautious to declare?! Nonsensical

It's the only way England were going to stop batting. I'm not sure whether Ashwin has done his team a service or not there!

England will have 50 minutes at India tonight - probably time for 10-12 overs.

They will probably say this was the plan. A short burst tonight and then they can come back tomorrow with fresh bowlers and the ball still fairly hard - which is when it does the most damage.

    All over.

India need a world record 420 to win the first Test and England need 10 wickets.

The whole declaration thing might become irrelevant soon!

Archer's better than that. That was not a devilish delivery.

Jimmy has got his pads on because he's strolling out to the middle.

That is five wickets for Ravichandran Ashwin, for the 28th time in Test cricket, as Jofra Archer doesn't move his feet and is bowled.

Just a single off Washington Sundar's first over.

England still could, should and probably will win this Test but this situation has opened a can of worms and a lot of questions.

Mason Crane has just ran out to the middle, with two water bottles, assumedly with a message too.

If India were to win this Test match, they would have to equal the world record. If they do that tomorrow we're in for a heck of a day's cricket!

It's almost as if they had a plan, pinned it on the dressing room wall, and they're making sure they're exactly there. They've had the scope to be a bit more proactive.

James Anderson is padded up in the changing room too. Joe Root is crouching beside him and the two are having a fairly in-depth conversation.

    What is actually going on?

Part of me wants India to draw this, just to teach England how to set a target/when to declare.

It does smack a bit of fear, doesn't it? The tactics have been peculiar in the last 40 minutes or so.

In Joe Root we trust. Trust that he has a plan and a reason. The fact that he's so calm should calm everyone else.

Four more! It's via a thick outside edge but Leach and England will not care.

India and Virat Kohli were moaning earlier in the over about Jofra Archer running down the wicket. Dan Lawrence was warned for that earlier remember.

Meanwhile Ben Stokes is beating a chocolate bar of some kind in the changing room.

Shot! Jack Leach dances down the track and whips over mid-wicket for four.

If Leach is going to play some shots I can get on board with us staying out there a little bit more.
