You don't want to be trying to hit Ashwin, on a pitch that's turning, through midwicket. That's what Rory Burns has done and it's almost got the back of the bat. Not necessarily the shot to play.

    Burns c Kohli b Ashwin 25 (Eng 49-2)

As easy as that. Ashwin tosses it up, Burns unwisely plays to leg and the ball loops off the edge to Kohli in the gully.

I think Burns used some words I can't repeat in telling himself off. It was a good little innings, defeat is just inevitable.

150 is a par score now. If England get beyond that, they're in credit.

    Burns 25, Lawrence 16

Lawrence's 52-ball nine was tortured in the first innings. He has come out with a different approach today, much more positive. Axar is firing the ball into the pitch and letting the sandpit do the rest.

Lawrence is having a right go! He looks like he's on Strictly Come Dancing, he keeps sashaying down the pitch.

Selector supremo Ed Smith is in the England dressing room. It's the first time I've seen him at the cricket without wearing sunglasses. It ruins the Bond villain vibe.

I assume he's there because of Covid reasons, not for a mid-Test selection meeting. Lawrence, one of those at risk, runs down and plants Ashwin into the stands. That's one way to make your point.

England have got to try to get to 35 overs when the ball gets a bit softer and easier to play and work around.

Daw Lawrence lurches forward like a man trying to creep up on an escaped farm animal, attempting to catch it again before it runs away. One leg out in front and then the other awkwardly follows. He's surviving. Just.

You can see they're trying to be busy and active but it's such a high-risk strategy.

    Target 482

I just got a funny look from my girlfriend as I groaned at a brute of a delivery from Ashwin to Burns. You know the type of noise I mean. An unintentional whimper when the ball beats bat.

Burns responds by using his feet again, taking a single to mid-off. Four byes add to England's total. Pant had no chance with the ball spitting out of the rough.

Arjun Singh: Before the #sibleyout brigade turn up, let’s try and remember that he’s 24 and on his first tour to India. Same for a lot of our team - nothing like a good hammering to learn how to be better.

Dan Lawrence wants to be positive too. Twice he hits Axar over mid-wicket with an unorthodox swish and on both occasions he gets four. It's nice batting. Just don't get out doing that. Simple, ey?

Burns has come out with a real positive mindset. That's all you can be - be busy and hope you have that element of fortune.

Let's not pan him too much, Sibley scored an impressive 87 last week. I don't even need to look up to know when a boundary has been hit. The change from a party atmosphere to silence tells you that.

Dan: Even when Sibley goes big he doesn't look convincing, never mind when struggling for double figures here. It's a painful viewing experience

Grant Kennett: Ah, the old Sibley-playing-across-a-straight-one trick when we need to bat for over 2 days, eh?

That was so out. The middle of middle. Kohli celebrated by waving a fist as he walked past Sibley, staring at the disappointed batsman.

Dan Lawrence is in. For all his promise of his debut knock, he needs a score or may be sitting out the next Test.

That's such a strong shot for him, that back-of-a-length ball he just clips through midwicket. Axar Patel just pushed it on a bit quicker and did him in the flight.

Ah. This is Dom Sibley in Sri Lanka all over again. We thought we'd seen the back of this. He goes back to the left-armer Axar, tries to play him against the spin into the leg side, misses and is trapped bang in front.

England's top-order blocker is gone. India are on their way.

Fair Oak sounds posh. No idea where it is. Ashwin drags England's scoring rate back with a maiden to Burns.

Keith's optimism has rubbed off on me with that sub head.
