Stokes 37, Pope 4
Lovely from Stokes, a straight-batted drive through mid-on for four. The sort of shot you can take home to meet your mother. Siraj has bowled unchanged since lunch. Compare that to how much pace was used last week. It tells you plenty about what India think of this pitch.

Waking up at 6.30, and staring into the blaring sun of a full brightness BBC Sport app when England are batting, perfectly mimics the same fear and jitters as waking up to find out my latest exam results.

I've just opened the curtains to the pleasant sight of daylight. In Ahmedabad, there's a check to make sure Ben Stokes hasn't clipped the first ball of a new Axar spell to short leg, but it doesn't take long to see it's bounced. Carry on.

Twice Siraj serves Pope a long half-volley and twice Pope has hit the ball straight to cover. A rueful smile from the Surrey man. Pope reminds me of the young cricket badger you find at every club. You know the sort. He plays three nights a week and twice on a Sunday.

England should be looking at 350 here on this pitch.
Pope plays Ashwin the best way - by getting to the other end. He watches Stokes display the sort of defence that some nations would pay billions of pounds for. Solid. So far, this pitch has been true. Batsmen have been able to trust it.

Former England captain on The Cricket Social
The first innings is when England need to cash in because in the third innings, it will be spinning. They have to bat a long period of time for the pitch to deteriorate enough for Dom Bess and Jack Leach.
And a fine job he would do too.
On The Cricket Social, Tuffers and Vaughan are mulling breakfast options. If you've been up since the start of play, you'll be thinking about a second breakfast soon. Getting up early is always a four-meal day.
Pope is about to face up to Ashwin...

Daz: If 58mph left-arm darts are doing the damage, England should have picked Michael Yardy for this series.
Stokes 33, Pope 2
That's nice from Stokes, who gets out of his bunker to dance at Ashwin and clip through mid-wicket for four. How long before Axar Patel is summoned?

In first-class cricket, India have been producing pitches which have suited the fast bowlers and that has led to a surge of fast bowlers coming through.
Siraj is bowling with gas, so much so that a bouncer knocks keeper Rishabh Pant off his feet and allows England through for a bye. At slip, Kohli has a pair of sunglasses on his face and a pair at the back of his cap. Eyes in the back of his head.

This has been poor from England - this is the sort of pitch we are used to seeing in India. It's a different pitch to the last match and at 78-4, England are a long way short. There's a real chance here to post a big score. You want at least 300, maybe more, on a pitch like this.
Ashwin is being made to work hard by Stokes. Round the wicket, then over. Problem is, Stokes isn't scoring. Prod forward, defend, dot ball. A maiden. There's a risk of getting stuck.

Siraj has a fascinating story - he hadn't played red-ball cricket until he was in his early twenties. In India he averages 21 in first-class cricket and now as 16 Test wickets at 26. For India A, he took 70 wickets in 16 matches.
Ollie Pope is the new man. If you were being pessimistic, you would say the lower order starts here.
Looking at the Bairstow dismissal, at full speed it does look pretty out. Even though it only clipped the top of the pad, he was right back on his stumps. You can see why it was given.

That did Bairstow for pace. There's so much energy about Siraj's bowling. The red ball has been fizzing through much more than the pink ball did.
