The colour of the seats in cricket stadiums across the globe is a rabbit hole I am not prepared to enter.

Was trying to think about things other than our slightly ropey start and my attention turned to the brightly coloured seats in the stadium, which I quite like. Unlike the Gabba, whose seat colouring is an assault on the eyes and no doubt designed to wind us up in the traditional first test of an Ashes series.

Anyway, that ended up being an OKish morning for England. An awful first hour, followed by a spirited fightback.

The pitch hasn't turned too much. Yet. You wonder how important winning the toss might be.

Having said that, I under-clubbed when I went outside in only a light jacket a couple of days ago.

Spring has not fully sprung just yet. It's still big coat weather.

    Many thanks, Lofters.

It's almost time for me to hide he heating control from my other half.

She can have it back in November.

Right, I'm off to receive a lecture on the cost of heating bills. Stephan Shemilt is your man through to tea.

Here's a photograph of that heated exchange between Ben Stokes and Virat Kohli earlier. It all seems to have been forgotten about now.

Axar Patel walks off with 2-21 to his name, while Mohammed Siraj has 1-23 after dismissing captain Joe Root.

Not a bad recovery from 30-3, but still...

Rishabh Pant has just made a noise that I'm not quite sure how to describe. It's the sort of noise you'd make if you stood on a plug, except at a truly impressive pitch.

That's a... brave leave from Ben Stokes, bat hoicked high above his head, as the ball rattles into Rishabh Pant's gloves.

And that is a corker to end the over, Ashwin getting the ball to turn away from Stokes as he aims a huge gallumph down the ground.

It's my birthday on Saturday. Three weeks ago, I was looking forward to watching a day of Test cricket and a Liverpool win against Fulham. Waking up late today and seeing the score, and with Liverpool's current form. I think I'll leave the television off and do the garden.

A maiden from Axar Patel, and we'll squeeze in at least one more over before lunch.

Excellent bat sliding from Jonny Bairstow, and he's safely home.

I love this, Kate. A former colleague of mine once turned up a month early to cover a county game and didn't twig until the hotel couldn't find his booking. The fact that the ground was locked up tight wasn't enough of a hint.

Was it just me who woke up at 3.30am yesterday, absolutely convinced that there was cricket on? Luckily I opted to stay in bed and read about the toss and team news on the live text. I was thinking you were being a bit unprofessional starting so late when the truth finally dawned. Disappointing, but in some ways preferable to today.

More width from Ishant Sharma and it gets the same treatment from Jonny Bairstow, jabbed away with ease for four.

Ishant readjusts, and Bairstow ends the over with a risky leave that sees the ball just brush past off stump.

    Well!

Ben Stokes advances to his second delivery from Ravichandran Ashwin and plonks him high over the boundary rope for six.
