And that's us done for another round of County Championship action. Another round affected by the weather with seven draws.

The only victors were Notts who completed an extraordinary innings victory over Worcestershire earlier today.

We'll be back on Thursday when round eight gets under way.

    Until then, goodbye.

  4. SURREY DRAW WITH MIDDLESEXpublished at 18:54 British Summer Time 23 May 2021
    Breaking

    Surrey 190 & 259-2 dec v Middlesex 160 & 250-6

Robbie White keeps out the first three balls of the final over, bowled by Reece Topley, and as the clock approaches 19:00 the players shake hands.

That was a great effort by Middlesex to chase a target of 290, and who knows what might have happened if rain hadn't robbed them of five overs as the match was nearing its climax.

Superb batting by Nick Gubbins, who made 124 off 145 balls and put on 172 with Peter Handscomb, but Middlesex now look out of it in the race to progress from Group Two.

With three games left, they are 49 points behind Somerset in second place and must beat bottom of the table Leicestershire in their next game.

    Surrey 190 & 259-2 dec v Middlesex 160 & 250-6

Tom Helm tries to cut the last ball of the over, doesn't make a clean contact and Kemar Roach finishes with 5-86 - and match figures of 9-147.

Four wickets in six balls needed by Surrey.

    Surrey 190 & 259-2 dec v Middlesex 160 & 250-6

Tom Helm doesn't lack courage. He is solidly behind the next two deliveries before Kemar Roach sends down a bouncer which is called a no-ball.

Yorker by Roach. Helm digs it out. Four wickets needed from 10 balls.

    Surrey 190 & 259-2 dec v Middlesex 160 & 248-6

Kemar Roach starts with a bouncer. Tom Helm was struck on the helmet in the first innings - if memory serves me correctly - but he evades this one.

    Surrey 190 & 259-2 dec v Middlesex 160 & 248-6

It's a maiden by Reece Topley.

Surrey have 12 balls left to try and take four wickets.

    Surrey 190 & 259-2 dec v Middlesex 160 & 248-6

Rory Burns brings the Surrey field in.

Reece Topley bangs in a bouncer and Robbie White ducks.

Is a yorker coming next? No, but White can do no more than defend into the covers.

  11. Postpublished at 18:41 British Summer Time 23 May 2021

    Surrey 190 & 259-2 dec v Middlesex 160 & 248-6

Robbie White and Tom Helm together now for Middlesex.

White takes a single, leaving Helm to face the last ball of Kemar Roach's over and he settles for a defensive stroke.

Middlesex need 42 off three - Surrey need four wickets. Both sides need a win, given the Group Two table.

    Andersson b Roach 7 (Surrey 190 & 259-2 dec v Middlesex 160 & 247-6)

Martin Andersson drives square for four but is cleaned up by Kemar Roach's next delivery. Suddenly, Surrey have a chance to win this game.

    Gubbins c Burns b Roach 124 (Surrey 190 & 259-2 dec v Middlesex 160 & 243-5)

That's surely the end of Middlesex's run-chase as Nick Gubbins holes out to Rory Burns. He batted for 205 minutes, faced 145 balls and hit 13 fours and two sixes. Four wickets now for Kemar Roach and eight in the game.

47 runs still required off 23 balls.

Excellent bowling by Reece Topley. Just seven from the over. Middlesex need 47 from four.

    Surrey 190 & 259-2 dec v Middlesex 160 & 235-4

Another slower delivery from Kemar Roach, but this time Nick Gubbins spots it and clobbers it over the rope for a maximum over mid-wicket.

A wide follows. What can Gubbins do from Roach's final delivery? Just a single as he punches it down the ground - 54 from five required.

    Simpson b Roach 4 (Surrey 190 & 259-2 dec v Middlesex 160 & 227-4)

A slower ball from Kemar Roach and John Simpson plays on. He was the mainstay of Middlesex' first innings, but couldn't produce a miracle to see them to victory.

Martin Andersson is the new batsman.

    Surrey 190 & 259-2 dec v Middlesex 160 & 224-3

Ouch. After a couple of singles to start the over, Nick Gubbins clonks himself on the foot as he tries to keep out a Reece Topley yorker.

He pulls the next ball, but it's only one run - Middlesex badly need a big finish to this over.

They don't get it. Again, only singles are permitted - 66 from six needed.

If only that short rain delay hadn't happened.....

    Handscomb c Pope b Roach 70 (Surrey 190 & 259-2 dec v Middlesex 160 & 219-3)

Three singles isn't enough for Middlesex so Peter Handscomb gives himself room and tries to carve Kemar Roach to the boundary. He doesn't succeed as Ollie Pope takes the catch to end a fabulous stand of 172.

It's a very good over - 71 from seven needed.
