In case you had forgotten, Amar Virdi is in Surrey's XI for this match, and yet the off-spinner has not yet bowled a single delivery.

Two fours from Peter Handcsomb boost the Middlesex total and Nick Gubbins adds one of his own in the next over, driven back past bowler Jordan Clark. He ends it on 49 not out.

The visitors need another 166 from 28 overs.

Dane Paterson strikes Ben Cox on the pad and up goes the finger. The Pears wicketkeeper is on his way for a duck.

Skies are still gloomy. Four wickets to go.

Five wickets for Derbyshire seamer Ben Aitchison for the first time in his fledgling career!

The right-armer removes Ned Eckersley lbw for 82 and now has 5-21.

Ah, but they're going off for bad light.

  10. Postpublished at 16:22 British Summer Time 23 May 2021

    Surrey 190 & 259-2 dec v Middlesex 160 & 100-2

Jordan Clark starts a new spell for Surrey and the total reaches three figures, courtesy of a single by Nick Gubbins. It was tip and run, basically, and Clark has to trudge over and pick the ball up himself.

  12. Postpublished at 16:13 British Summer Time 23 May 2021

    Surrey 190 & 259-2 dec v Middlesex 160 & 93-2

The boundaries keep coming for Nick Gubbins, who tucks the final ball of the latest Kemar Roach over away through square leg.

There is one to follow for partner Peter Handscomb, who forces a short-of-a-length delivery from Reece Topley away past point.

Another 197 needed from 35 overs - the rate has come just a fraction.

  13. Postpublished at 16:13 British Summer Time 23 May 2021

Back out at Derbyshire after a brief delay for bad light.

  14. 'Likely to be no more play'published at 16:10 British Summer Time 23 May 2021

    Essex 217 v Warwickshire 166 & 66-1 - rain delay

    Nick Gledhill
    BBC Essex

Play was due to re-start here at 15:30 BST but another sharp shower delayed that and the umpires have been out in the middle with the ground staff ever since.

Chelmsford is known as a quick drying ground but the amount of rain in recent days combined with the lack of sun has had an impact on conditions on the square. There is likely to be no more play.

This group continues to fascinate with the likely scenario of 11 points covering the top five. But Essex are in a corner having played a game more than most of their rivals. They go to Durham then host Nottinghamshire. It looks as though they will need at least a win and a draw from the two games.

  15. Postpublished at 16:07 British Summer Time 23 May 2021

    Surrey 190 & 259-2 dec v Middlesex 160 & 84-2

Having praised Reece Topley's bowling in our tea summary, his first over following the resumption proves costly, with two boundaries for Nick Gubbins. The first is a long half-volley hammered through the covers and the second struck wide of mid-off. Gubbins moves to 34 not out.

  16. Bad light stops playpublished at 16:04 British Summer Time 23 May 2021

    Derbys 258 v Durham 168-7

It was really gloomy in the lead up to tea at The Incora County Ground and if anything it's got even worse during the interval.

The final session of the game is delayed.

  17. Final session at Trent Bridgepublished at 16:02 British Summer Time 23 May 2021

    Notts 400-5 dec v Worcs 80 & 114-4 (f/o)

So, the final session of the match gets under way in Nottingham.

How much time will Notts have to try and prize out these last six Worcestershire wickets?

41 overs are left, but I'd be amazed if they get those in.

  18. Required rate climbs for Middlesexpublished at 15:53 British Summer Time 23 May 2021

    Surrey 190 & 259-2 dec v Middlesex 160 & 74-2

Peter Handscomb clips Rikki Clarke away for four to square leg and one ball later it is tea at the Kia Oval.

There are 38 overs of play remaining and Middlesex need another 216 to secure a second win of the season. That is a rate of almost 5.7 per over, so a draw may be the height of their ambitions.

Handscomb is 14 not out and Nick Gubbins has 24. Reece Topley has been the pick of Surrey's bowlers so far, with 1-16 from six overs.

  19. Strange goings on at Derbypublished at 15:48 British Summer Time 23 May 2021

    Tea: Derbys 258 v Durham 168-7

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

The lights are on in Derby and there's a threat of rain again. As a result this one has turned into a bit of a farce.

Derbyshire fear they will be taken off for bad light so we have seen some rare spin from Leus du Plooy, who averages nearly 50 for each first-class wicket he's taken.

Ben Aitchison, who has taken a career-best four wickets, returned with an over of some sort of spin just before tea, even though he is a pacey seamer who was causing all kinds of problems earlier. His spin bowling style was unusual to say the least, with a strange delivery and release.

Durham are 168-7 at tea and trail by 90. Ned Eckersley has 72 of them. Durham need another 32 runs for a first batting point and Derbyshire another two wickets for a third bowling point. Place your bets on the time they will shake hands on a draw!

  20. Tea at Trent Bridgepublished at 15:44 British Summer Time 23 May 2021

    Notts 400-5 dec v Worcs 80 & 114-4 (f/o)

That's the end of the afternoon session and Notts will need six wickets after tea to win this match.

Doable, but they'll be hoping the rain stays away for long enough.
