Moriarty lbw van der Merwe 0published at 11:04 British Summer Time 14 July 2021

    Surrey 239-9 v Somerset 429

Daniel Moriarty is the man to fall, Roelof van der Merwe proving to be the Sherlock Holmes to his professor.

The lbw decision, off the final ball of the day's first over, is elementary for the umpire and that's 4-54 for Van Der Merwe now.

Wonder if Somerset will enforce the follow-on.

  5. Jimmy Anderson left unused againpublished at 10:58 British Summer Time 14 July 2021

The abandonment of the Roses match in Leeds means that England’s record-breaking fast bowler Jimmy Anderson has now not bowled a ball in two of his four Championship appearances for Lancashire this summer.

He was left similarly unused when the game with Northamptonshire at Wantage Road in May was also badly affected by the weather.

Ahead of the forthcoming Test series with India, Anderson has taken 11 wickets in 2021, of which seven came in that astonishing first innings demolition of Kent last week.

This week was only his third appearance in a Roses match in Leeds since his first in 2002, followed by another in 2005.

With it being the final round of fixtures, it's worth a reminder of how things stand in the three groups ahead of the start of the final day.

In Group One, leaders Nottinghamshire have qualified for Division One after claiming the three bowling points they needed against third-placed Durham and they hold a 288-run lead with five wickets in hand.

As long as Durham don't pull off a big turnaround and win, then Warwickshire will also qualify for Division One as their derby with Worcestershire seems destined for a draw.

Essex's slim chances of breaking into the top two were ended on Monday by the Covid-enforced abandonment of their game with bottom side Derbyshire.

In Group Two, leaders Somerset are assured of a Division One berth - but it remains to be seen who will join them.

Hampshire are in pole position, having established a sizable first-innings lead against second-placed Gloucestershire at Cheltenham.

The hosts are three wickets down in their second innings and still trail by 150 - they must hope to bat out a draw, which would see them progress. Hampshire must win but have put themselves in a good position to do so.

Most matters in Group Three, meanwhile, are already decided with Yorkshire and Lancashire progressing - the abandonment of the Roses match meaning Lancashire snatch top spot by a point. Kent and Sussex are battling each other to avoid the wooden spoon.

  9. Roses match abandonedpublished at 10:48 British Summer Time 14 July 2021

Lancashire 411-2, Yorkshire did not bat. Lancs 11 pts, Yorks 8 pts

Play has been abandoned on the final day of the Roses match between Yorkshire and Lancashire before it began, as a result of the wet outfield, which caused such problems yesterday.

After inspecting the Rugby Stand end of the ground, umpires Ian Gould and Nigel Llong called it off, just as they did 7.2 overs into yesterday's afternoon session.

After Gould, Llong, both coaches and captains were involved in lengthy early morning discussions, play was called off just after 10.00 BST.

Both counties had already qualified from Group One. But, with Yorkshire having not picked up any bonus points, Lancashire’s 11 points from the contest means they top the group.

Having won the reverse fixture at Emirates Old Trafford in late May, Lancashire will carry forwards 16.5 points and Yorkshire 4.5 into the top group when four more games will be played to decide who become county champions and who reaches the the Bob Willis Trophy final.

  10. Good morning and welcomepublished at 10:46 British Summer Time 14 July 2021

Good morning all. Or is it?

The weather might look beautiful but it's a sad day if you're a fan of County Championship cricket.

First and foremost, there is the abandonment of the Roses match.

Always a sad occasion whenever the weather intervenes like that - especially in the circumstances that left Yorkshire seamer Dom Leech with such a nasty injury, after slipping on the dangerously wet outfield.

But this is the last day of proper county cricket for 45 days - until this split Championship season reconvenes on 30 August for the denouement.

In the meantime, English cricket is in for a real sea change as The Hundred finally gets going, timed to coincide with the start of the school holidays.

As to which of the three divisions the 18 county teams will be in when red ball cricket resumes for the final month of the season, mostly in September, that will all be decided.

Four of the places in the top Division are already decided - Nottinghamshire in Group One, Somerset in Group Two and the two weather-hit Roses rivals, table-topping Lancashire and Yorkshire in Group Three.

All that remains to be seen is which of Gloucestershire and Hampshire from Group Two will join them - and whether Durham can pull off a miracle in Group One to deny Warwickshire, for which to happen they must beat Notts and the Bears must lose at Worcester. Neither of which is at all likely to happen.

Whatever does occur, in all seven games, we'll be across it all.
