Some gripping day of action on day two of our eight Championship matches and Nottinghamshire will fancy their chances of victory after taking control against Somerset at Taunton.

It was a memorable day for Notts all-rounder Liam Patterson-White, who made 101 with the help of 18 fours, and pace bowler Luke Fletcher weighed in with 51 and four wickets.

Elsewhere in Division One, Lancashire made a strong start in reply to Warwickshire's 371 all out, while Yorkshire have a 114-run lead over Hampshire with nine wickets standing.

We'll be back tomorrow with all the news of the third day's play. Hope to see you then.

  3. Close of play at the Ageas Bowlpublished at 18:57 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Hampshire 163 v Yorkshire 243 & 34-1

Yorkshire avoid any damage in Ian Holland's final over and end day two with a 114-run lead over Hampshire.

The home side were bowled out in 62.3 overs earlier in the day as their batsmen - with the exception of James Vince - also found scoring difficult.

Vince was caught in the deep for 49, a dismissal which probably cost his side any chance of a first-innings advantage.

Tom Kohler-Cadmore will start day three 16 not out, with partner George Hill on 10.

    Hampshire 163 v Yorkshire 243 & 32-1

We are going to see some spin. Here comes Liam Dawson.

    It's a tidy maiden to Tom Kohler-Cadmore.

    One over to come.

  5. Postpublished at 18:48 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Hampshire 163 v Yorkshire 243 & 32-1

Easy pickings for Yorkshire opener George Hill, who clips Ian Holland away through mid-wicket for four. Two overs to go, the lead is 112.

  6. Postpublished at 18:46 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Hampshire 163 v Yorkshire 243 & 27-1

Hampshire resist the temptation to try an over of spin as Keith Barker steams in for another over - his fifth in this mini-session after Hampshire were bowled out 80 runs in arrears.

George Hill helps himself to a couple of runs - there are three overs left in the day's play. Ian Holland will bowl the next one.

  7. Postpublished at 18:38 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Hampshire 163 v Yorkshire 243 & 21-1

The Ageas Bowl is the only ground with play ongoing - and Yorkshire have six overs to survive after Tom Kohler-Cadmore drives Brad Wheal past mid-off for four to end the paceman's latest. The right-hander is 13 not out and the lead is now 101.

  8. Close of play at Leicesterpublished at 18:37 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Leicestershire 109 v Kent 232 & 210-9

That is the close in the East Midlands with Kent nine down in their second innings, but well on top given their 333-run lead.

Leicestershire were bundled out for 109 in their first innings, losing their last five wickets for 43 to be 123 behind.

They could not make the early breakthroughs needed to get back into the game and despite 5-41 from Callum Parkinson, the evergreen Darren Stevens remains unbeaten on 55, off only 42 balls, and he has almost certainly batted the opposition out of the game.

  9. Postpublished at 18:28 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Hampshire 163 v Yorkshire 243 & 15-1

Tom Kohler-Cadmore is squared up by Keith Barker but collects four runs from an edge wide of third slip.

There are seven overs left for Yorkshire to negotiate - and their lead is 95.

  10. Five wickets for Callum Parkinsonpublished at 18:26 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Leicestershire 109 v Kent 232 & 210-9

Superb effort from Leicestershire slow left-armer Callum Parkinson to take five wickets in the second innings at Grace Road.

That is now nine in the match for the twin brother of Lancashire and England bowler Matt, but with the lead 333, Kent are still in a very strong position.

  11. Close of play at Lord'spublished at 18:25 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Middlesex 282 v Derbyshire 201-9

Ben Aitchison glances a boundary off spinner Thilan Walallawita to earn a Derbyshire a batting point before fading light ends the second day at the home of cricket.

It's been a tough day for the visitors after Middlesex added 64 to their overnight 218-5, with Robbie White finally out for 120, caught off Sam Conners.

Derbyshire were reduced to 76-6 by Tim Murtagh and Ethan Bamber before Leus du Plooy (90) and Anuj Dal (48) added 91 for the seventh wicket.

Murtagh and Bamber have four wickets each - with the priospect of a five-for for one of them on the third morning.

  13. Close of play at Old Traffordpublished at 18:15 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Lancashire 100-1 v Warwickshire 371

Lancashire have fought back hard on day two after Warwickshire took the plaudits on the opening day.

They took the last seven wickets for 112 runs as Saqib Mahmood finished with 4-77 and have progressed nicely for the loss of only one wicket.

But halfway through the match and with the scoring rates not exactly electric, it may take some inspired batting or bowling to deliver a positive result.

WICKET Lyth c McManus b Wheal 7published at 18:12 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Hampshire 163 v Yorkshire 243 & 7-1

    Adam LythImage source, Rex Features

Adam Lyth falls cheaply for the second time in the game as an angled delivery by Brad Wheal takes a thin edge and it's a straightforward catch for keeper Lewis McManus.

Will Yorkshire send out a nightwatchman? Not yet. Here comes Tom Kohler-Cadmore. The lead is 87.

  15. Close of play at Tauntonpublished at 18:06 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Somerset 87-7 v Nottinghamshire 448

That is indeed the finish at Taunton where Nottinghamshire could barely have hoped for a better day.

It's hard to decide who has been the Player of the Day. Liam Patterson-White made a magnificent first Championship hundred with 101 coming in at number eight, before Luke Fletcher took over.

He clubbed 51 with the bat and then ran through the first four wickets of Somerset's innings as he became the first man to 50 Championship wickets this season.

Trailing by 361 runs, Somerset are staring at an innings defeat after only two days.

  16. Yorkshire will play for stumpspublished at 18:05 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Hampshire 163 v Yorkshire 243

We await the resumption at the Ageas Bowl, where Yorkshire will have 12 overs to face before stumps.

The pitch remains a tricky one to bat on and the White Rose county may feel a lead anywhere over 200 will prove a tough target for Hampshire.

  17. Spin at both endspublished at 18:02 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Lancashire 98-1 v Warwickshire

With spin at both ends, play carries on up north.

Danny Briggs has already wheeled away for 15 tidy overs, conceding just 22 but he would love to somehow snaffle a second Lancashire wicket before the close.

  18. Close of play in Cardiffpublished at 18:02 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Division Two: Glamorgan 134 & 71-6 v Essex 320

Glamorgan live to fight another day - but only just as bad light ends play at Sophia Gardens with the Welsh county needing another 115 runs to avoid an innings defeat.

Nick Browne's 102, made from 223 balls, helped Essex establish a big first-innings lead, aided and abetted by Michael Pepper with 63.

Glamorgan were in disarray at 29-6 in their second innings, but Chris Cooke (39) and Andrew Salter (11) shared an unbroken stand of 42 to take the game into a third day.

  19. wicket

WICKET Wheal c Duke b Coad 12published at 17:54 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Hampshire 163 v Yorkshire 243

A last-wicket stand of 40 comes to an end as Brad Wheal dangles his bat to a ball from Ben Coad and is caught behind.

Kyle Abbott is left unbeaten on 21 and although Hampshire trail by 80 on first innings, that's a lot better than it might have been.

No batting bonus points for the home side, though, which is bad news in the overall title picture.

  20. Bad light stops play at Tauntonpublished at 17:54 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Somerset 87-7 v Nottinghamshire 448

The umpires have taken the players off for bad light with Somerset in deep trouble. Not sure we'll get back on though.
