Postpublished at 11:17 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Hampshire v Yorkshire 203-7

Dom Bess picks up his first run of the morning to advance to 46 not out then Matthew Fisher takes a blow on the hand from a ball by Brad Wheal. He is ok to carry on despite the jarred fingers.

  2. Third batting point for the visitorspublished at 11:16 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Somerset v Nottinghamshire 304-6

A third batting point is quickly brought up by Nottinghamshire with some lovely strokeplay from Liam Patterson-White and Tom Moores.

Patterson-White could have been taken though, although it would have taken a superb catch from Somerset captain Tom Abell at second slip after he had slashed at one off Josh Davey.

  3. Delayed start at Bristolpublished at 11:13 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Gloucestershire v Northamptonshire 232-5

We spoke too soon in suggesting there would be eight prompt starts.

There has been no action yet at the County Ground in Bristol because of rain.

Adam Rossington (66) and Harry Gouldstone (32) are the not out Northants batsmen in this Division Two fixture.

  4. First batting point for Tykespublished at 11:06 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Hampshire v Yorkshire 200-7

Matthew Fisher is the new Yorkshire batsman following Jordan Thompson's early exit (see 11:01 entry). He clips Brad Wheal through square leg for three runs and there is a first batting point for the visitors.

They need as many as they can get in this innings, having started the match 16.5 behind Warwickshire on 'carry forward'.

  5. 50 runs

    50 for Liam Patterson-Whitepublished at 11:06 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Somerset v Nottinghamshire 286-6

The first scoring shot of the day at Taunton brings up a half-century for Liam Patterson-White.

A glorious straight drive off Josh Davey takes him to 50 off 44 balls with ten fours for his third half-century of the Championship season.

  6. wicket

WICKET Thompson b Wheal 15published at 11:01 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Hampshire v Yorkshire 197-7

Two balls is all it takes at the Ageas Bowl.

Brad Wheal angles one across Jordan Thompson, who tries to leave it alone, but doesn't lift the bat in time and deflects it down into his stumps.

You can only imagine what is going through his head. Probably most of it is in asterisks.

Looks like we have eight prompt starts. Where will the first wicket fall?

  9. Who will grab control at Taunton?published at 10:54 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

Somerset v Nottinghamshire 282-6 - play resumes at 11.00 BST

A fascinating first day at Taunton ended with Nottinghamshire just about on top thanks to an unbroken seventh wicket stand of 74 between Tom Moores and Liam Patterson-White.

As so often, the first hour or so will be crucial to the outcome of the match. If Notts push on towards 350, having been asked to bat, they will pile the pressure on Somerset.

But if the home attack can quickly bundle out the remaining four wickets and their batsmen can then lay the foundations for a good total, the pressure will switch back to the visitors.

  11. Can Red Rose bounce back?published at 10:49 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

Lancashire v Warwickshire 259-3 - play resumes at 11.00 BST

Yesterday was one of hard graft for little reward for Lancashire as Chris Benjamin and Sam Hain made excellent hundreds for Warwickshire.

But it's a new day for everyone and Lancs will hope to make big inroads under grey skies with the new ball still only seven overs old.

This was my view on the walk to the office this morning, with preparations well under way for day two.

  12. 'Gritty' Yorkshire batted well - Besspublished at 10:46 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

Hampshire v Yorkshire 197-6 - play resumes at 11:00 BST

Yorkshire's Dom Bess hailed the tenacity shown by their batting line-up following a tough opening day against Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl.

The White Rose county managed a scoring rate of 2.29 an over against tight Hampshire bowling, with Bess unbeaten on 45.

"I don't think the scoreboard reflects how well we've batted," the England all-rounder told BBC West Yorkshire Sport.

"It was really good grit (by us) and hopefully, if it's a bit sunnier tomorrow, we can pile on some more runs."

  15. Good morningpublished at 10:35 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

"I’m not obsessed with individual titles. I’m much more interested in being part of a team which wins trophies.”

Who said that? Yes, it was Manchester United 'new boy' Cristiano Ronaldo.

The County Championship trophy is what six teams have in their sights, and although we do not know if Ronaldo has ever visited Old Trafford, the cricket ground, leaders Warwickshire certainly enjoyed a productive start to their game there against Lancashire.

What will day two of our eight matches have in store? You've come to the right place to find out. Play starts at 11:00 BST.
