When the current Championship matches began, Nottinghamshire, Yorkshire and Hampshire were all playing catch up on Warwickshire, Somerset and Lancashire in the title race because of points carried forward.

Notts, however, have done their bit to close the gap by rolling over Somerset by an innings with a day to spare at Taunton as Dane Paterson took 4-46.

Yorkshire are in a good position to follow suit against Hampshire, but a draw looks favourite between Lancashire and Warwickshire.

We also had wins for Essex and Kent today - the latter's first of the season - and we'll be back with you tomorrow for full coverage. See you then.

  3. Close of play at Ageas Bowlpublished at 18:29 British Summer Time 1 September 2021

    Hampshire 163 & 26-2 v Yorkshire 243 & 312-6 dec

Joe Weatherley plays out a maiden form Adam Lyth - but the wicket of Tom Alsop in the previous over has left Yorkshire well on top ahead of the final day's play at the Ageas Bowl.

Gary Ballance's unbeaten 101 off 86 balls - against an attack minus injured Kyle Abbott and Brad Wheal - enabled Yorkshire to declare 392 ahead.

James Vince is still to come for Hampshire, but survival is likely to be their sole focus as the match reaches its conclusion.

  4. Close of play at Old Traffordpublished at 18:25 British Summer Time 1 September 2021

    Lancashire 341 v Warwickshire 371 & 52-1

Chris Benjamin has impressed in the second innings after his hundred in the first, stroking four fours in an unbeaten 28 and helping his team to 52-1 at stumps.

Warwickshire lead by 82 runs after three days and they control the destiny of the game. But they will have to bat positively in the morning to get themselves into a position to declare.

Lancashire will need a spectacular session with the ball for an unlikely victory, and the draw remains the most likely result of the lot.

  5. Postpublished at 18:24 British Summer Time 1 September 2021

    Hampshire 163 & 26-2 v Yorkshire 243 & 312-6 dec

Mason Crane does his job for the final five balls of the over, but is unable to rotate the strike so he will face the last one of the day, to be bowled by Adam Lyth. A wicket maiden for Dom Bess.

    Hampshire 163 & 26-2 v Yorkshire 243 & 312-6 dec

An unbeaten century and now a catch at silly mid-off for Gary Ballance as an inside edge lobs up off Tom Alsop's pad.

Dom Bess has the breakthrough and night-watchman Mason Crane has to come out with 11 balls remaining in the day's play.

  7. Postpublished at 18:18 British Summer Time 1 September 2021

    Hampshire 163 & 26-1 v Yorkshire 243 & 312-6 dec

Another maiden from Jordan Thompson and Hampshire have two overs left to survive on day three at the Ageas Bowl. Joe Weatherley is 16 not out and Tom Alsop has seven.

  8. Close of play at Lord'spublished at 18:18 British Summer Time 1 September 2021

    Middlesex 282 & 256 v Derbyshire 205 & 42-1

Bad light ends the day early at Lord's where Billy Godleman and Tom Wood have battled well to reach 42-1 after the loss of Luis Reece for a duck.

Derbyshire added four to their overnight 201-9 in their first innings before Middlesex rattled along to 256 at almost four an over in their second. Sam Robson top scored with 52 but nobody could get the big score to completely bat their opponents out of the game.

But in setting a fourth innings target of 334, the home side still look by far the more likely winners.

  9. Close of play at Worcesterpublished at 18:15 British Summer Time 1 September 2021

    Worcestershire 213 v Sussex 264 & 199-6

An intriguing final day is in prospect at New Road after bad light ends play with Sussex 250 to the good.

Dan Ibrahim (56 not out) and Archie Lenham - both 17 years old - are the not out batsmen after Ali Orr (57) and Fynn Hudson-Prentice (46) helped the visitors recover from 87-4.

Worcestershire only added 27 to their overnight 186-7 earlier in the day as paceman Henry Crocombe took 3-44.

  10. Close of play at Bristolpublished at 18:11 British Summer Time 1 September 2021

    D2: Gloucestershire 191 v Northamptonshire 327 & 92-7

The umpires call off play because of bad light in Bristol, with Northamptonshire 228 ahead despite struggling in their second innings.

Luke Proctor took 5-42 as Gloucestershire failed to earn a batting point earlier in the day despite Graeme van Buuren's 56.

But the visitors soon found themselves 26-3 and Ryan Higgins (3-26) nipped out Harry Gouldstone and Adam Rossington in successive overs before the teams had to leave the field.

  11. Postpublished at 18:07 British Summer Time 1 September 2021

    Hampshire 163 & 23-1 v Yorkshire 243 & 312-6 dec

Yorkshire call up England spinner Dom Bess - a predictable decision as they look to make a second breakthrough before the close. Joe Weatherley does not look entirely comfortable but plays out a maiden and there are five more overs to come.

  12. Postpublished at 18:01 British Summer Time 1 September 2021

    Hampshire 163 & 23-1 v Yorkshire 243 & 312-6 dec

Tom Alsop pinches a strike with a single from the final ball of the latest Matthew Fisher over. There are seven more for Hampshire survive, having been set a target of 393 by Yorkshire's earlier declaration.

    Hampshire 163 & 21-1 v Yorkshire 243 & 312-6 dec

Matthew Fisher overpitches and Joe Weatherley puts it away unerringly through the covers to move on to 14 not out. There are nine overs left after this one and Hampshire cannot afford any further loss before stumps.

Indeed, since ending their 1043-day wait for a Championship victory in May, Notts have now had four innings wins which is fantastic form.

  15. Alsop finds the boundarypublished at 17:42 British Summer Time 1 September 2021

    Hampshire 163 & 17-1 v Yorkshire 243 & 312-6 dec

Tom Alsop only hit one four in 96 balls at the crease in Hampshire's first innings. It only takes him three to match that boundary total in this knock as he cover drives Ben Coad. Hampshire need another 376 to win and there are 12 overs remaining this evening.

This is why Saqib Mahmood is on England's radar!

Mahmood castles Rob Yates as he beats the Warwickshire opener for sheer pace to flatten the off-stump. A glorious sight!

Warwickshire lead by 35 and are going nowhere at the moment.

  17. Latest from Divisions Two and Threepublished at 17:35 British Summer Time 1 September 2021

Adam Rossington is bowled by Ryan Higgins for 18 and Northamptonshire are 92-7 in our one remaining Division Two game, a lead of 228 over Gloucestershire.

They have gone off for bad light at New Road in Division Three, with Sussex 250 in front on 199-6 - Dan Ibrahim is 56 not out.

The teams are back out at Lord's where Derbyshire are 14-1 against Middlesex, chasing a target of 334.

WICKET Holland c Brook b Coad 3published at 17:31 British Summer Time 1 September 2021

    Hampshire 163 & 9-1 v Yorkshire 243 & 312-6 dec

If Hampshire need any extra self-belief, they only have to think back two months to Hashim Amla batting through the final day for 37 not out as Surrey held out for a draw at the Ageas Bowl.

The home side's hopes of a similar survival effort suffer a major setback, though, as Ian Holland edges to third slip where Harry Brook takes a superb left-handed catch just millimetres above the ground.

  19. Great for five days, less so fourpublished at 17:28 British Summer Time 1 September 2021

    Lancashire 341 v Warwickshire 371 & 4-0

Scott Read on BBC Radio Lancashire has just said that pitches are Old Trafford are ideal for five-day matches, which is good to hear when there is a Test taking place next week.

But not quite so for a four-day county game where Warwickshire have taken four runs from as many overs to inch their lead to 34.

  20. 'Small margins' cost Glamorganpublished at 17:25 British Summer Time 1 September 2021

    D2: Glamorgan 134 & 112 v Essex 320

One-Day Cup winners they may be, but Glamorgan were on the receiving end of an innings-and-74-runs defeat by Essex this morning.

Afterwards, head coach Matthew Maynard told BBC Sport Wales: "The prep with having so many players isolated before the game had a little bit of an effect, but not as much as that (result).

"On a new-ball wicket, they exploited conditions in both innings better than we did, they took their chances and we dropped Browne on eight before his crucial hundred.

"It looks like an absolute hammering but it's small margins. It's a disappointing way to start but Essex have been county championship winners in the last couple of years, they want to show every team how good you need to be."
