  1. Thank you and goodnightpublished at 18:37 British Summer Time 22 September 2021

Phew! That completes another action-packed, at times unbearably breathless, day in the County Championship.

The light is fading fast in Birmingham but, come tomorrow morning, all eyes will be on both Edgbaston and Aigburth.

If Warwickshire do not take the four more Somerset wickets they need inside the remaining 33 overs left of the visitors' first innings, then that will throw a bone to both Lancashire and Hampshire in Liverpool - a game that looks highly unlikely to end in a draw.

But, if the Bears do get those two remaining required bowling bonus points (they only need nine, not ten, wickets before the 110-over cut-off mark), then that would leave the title in their own hands.

They have not won it since 2012, Lancashire not since 2011, Hampshire not since 1973.

By close of play tomorrow, we should know a lot more.

Please join us at 10:30. Let's hope it's good stuff, although maybe not quite as frantic as this morning's astonishing wicket-taking frenzy!!!

  3. Close of play at Aigburthpublished at 18:27 British Summer Time 22 September 2021

    Lancashire 141 v Hampshire 143 & 158-7

A thrilling day of cricket ends at Aigburth.

Twists and turns, 14 wickets, five-fers for Tom Bailey and Mohammad Abbas and a 69 from James Vince.

Hampshire lead by 160 runs, but those two wickets at the end have kept Lancashire interested.

  4. wicket

WICKET Dawson b Bailey 41published at 18:17 British Summer Time 22 September 2021

    Lancashire 141 v Hampshire 143 & 158-7

Tom Bailey has produced a late-evening beauty to get rid of Liam Dawson.

He gets a bit of in-dip to knock over Dawson's off stump. However, Dawson has contributed a more than useful 41.

Terrific bowling from Bailey - 16-6-19-5.

  5. wicket

WICKET Vince lbw b Parkinson 69published at 18:12 British Summer Time 22 September 2021

    Lancashire 141 v Hampshire 143 & 158-6

Late drama in Liverpool and James Vince has gone!

A mixture of desperation and conviction in Matt Parkinson's appeal as he hits Vince on the pads. The finger goes up and it is something Lancashire desperately needed.

But with 69, the Hampshire captain may well have played the game's defining knock.

  6. Close of play at Trent Bridgepublished at 18:01 British Summer Time 22 September 2021

    Nottinghamshire 296 v Yorkshire 73 & 169-3

That Fisher dismissal is the last ball of the day in Nottingham.

  7. wicket

WICKET Fisher lbw b Paterson 0published at 17:58 British Summer Time 22 September 2021

    Nottinghamshire 296 v Yorkshire 73 & 169-3

Matt Fisher is given four balls to see off by Adam Lyth and he can only manage two as he is pinned LBW by Dane Paterson.

Two wickets in the last two overs has changed the mood for the hosts after an afternoon of hard graft.

Yorkshire trail by 54 runs with seven wickets remaining in their second innings.

  8. wicket

    WICKET Kohler-Cadmore lbw b Patterson-White 49published at 17:51 British Summer Time 22 September 2021

    Nottinghamshire 296 v Yorkshire 73 & 168-2

A breakthrough for Nottinghamshire in the penultimate over at Trent Bridge.

Tom Kohler-Cadmore falls one short of a deserved half-century when he is pinned LBW by a quicker one from left-arm spinner Liam Patterson-White.

He and Lyth were so close to going through the final session with the partnership unbroken. It ends at 103.

  9. Close of play at Edgbastonpublished at 17:51 British Summer Time 22 September 2021

    Warwickshire 367, Somerset 239-5

That's it for the day in Birmingham - to set up another intriguing morning in prospect on day three, when Somerset will resume 128 runs behind, but with five wickets still standing.

Warwickshire only picked up a crucial fourth batting bonus point in the final over this morning.

That meant that the title was in their own hands if they went on to claim maximum bowling points and go on to beat Somerset.

But they have so far claimed just five of those wickets.

They will return tomorrow with a further 33 overs to pick up the four they need to get to nine - and claim maximum bowling points.

  10. 50 runs

Last over of the day at Edgbastonpublished at 17:49 British Summer Time 22 September 2021

    Warwickshire 367, Somerset 238-5

Chris Woakes to bowl it - and Steven Davies edges to third man to bring up a 50 partnership with Lewis Gregory.

  11. Home fans heading for the exitspublished at 17:45 British Summer Time 22 September 2021

    Lancashire 141 v Hampshire 143 & 141-5

As the second day draws to a close, plenty of Lancashire fans have seen enough at Aigburth.

This partnership between Vince and Dawson has knocked the stuffing out of the Red Rose and 24-4 seems a long time ago.

Lancs' Championship hopes are now in the 'very slim' category.

  12. GLOUCESTERSHIRE BEAT DURHAM BY 7 WICKETSpublished at 17:34 British Summer Time 22 September 2021

    Durham 140 & 131, Gloucestershire 218 & 54-4

A second two-day defeat in Division Two - as Gloucestershire's bowlers bring an early end to the campaign for both themselves and Durham.

Set 54 to win, they get the job done inside 10 overs.

Two days off then, followed by another six monrths . . .

  13. Somerset save follow-onpublished at 17:30 British Summer Time 22 September 2021

    Warwickshire 367, Somerset 220-5

There was never really much chance of it actually happening (despite maybe a few slightly furrowed brows at 187-5), or even of it being enforced. But Somerset are at least past the safety mark of 218.

There may not be too many more runs to come tonight. Survival is now the aim of the game.

But how much would the Bears love another breakthrough, to at least prise a second bowling point tonight?

With five overs left in the day, Chris Woakes is coming back on for another late burst - round the wicket to left-hander Steven Davies.

  14. Good cameopublished at 17:17 British Summer Time 22 September 2021

    Lancashire 141 v Hampshire 143 & 131-5

Vince has now clocked up successive 50 partnerships with Joe Weatherley and Liam Dawson.

While Vince has been the star, you do need people to stick around with you and Dawson has played a good cameo role since tea, currently unbeaten on 29.

  15. Nine overs left at Edgbastonpublished at 17:16 British Summer Time 22 September 2021

    Warwickshire 367, Somerset 212-5

Nine overs left in the day at Edgbaston.40 more before the all-important 110-over cut-off mark.

Danny Briggs already has two wickets to his name - to add to his earlier hard-hitting half-century - and would like another scalp tonight as he bowls into the rough outside left-hander Steven Davies's off stump.

Ominously, the sun has suddenly gone in.

  16. 50 runs

50 for James Vincepublished at 17:08 British Summer Time 22 September 2021

    Lancashire 141 v Hampshire 143 & 125-5

In the county game, there are few better than James Vince and he has shown that this afternoon.

Vince caresses the first ball of Matt Parkinson's spell through the covers for four. With nine fours and coming off 67 balls, he has played a blinder for his county.

He came in at 24-4 with his team in trouble. Now they are strong favourites for the win they need.

  17. 50 runs

50 for Adam Lythpublished at 17:01 British Summer Time 22 September 2021

    Nottinghamshire 296 v Yorkshire 73 & 119-1

An eighth boundary of the innings brings up a welcome half century for opener Adam Lyth.

It's his first 50 since April in first-class cricket and it's come off 139 balls. Something to take with him into the close season.

  18. wicket

    Goldsworthy c Woakes b Briggs 13published at 16:50 British Summer Time 22 September 2021

    Warwickshire 367, Somerset 187-5

Instead, it's Danny Briggs who makes the breakthrough in Birmingham as he tempts Lewis Goldsworthy to loft a short to mid on, where Chris Woakes holds on.

Somerset have now lost half their first-innings wickets and are still 31 away from avoiding a potential follow-on.

Lewis Gregory comes in to join the well-set Steven Davies.

18 overs remain in the day.

  19. Captain puts himself onpublished at 16:49 British Summer Time 22 September 2021

    Warwickshire 367, Somerset 183-4

Warwickshire skipper Will Rhodes puts himself on in an attempt to find another breakthrough for the Bears.

He has taken 26 wickets already this season with his medium pacers - and his arrival into the attack is cheered by the crowd.

But he has no luck. 10 off the over.

  20. White Rose resistancepublished at 16:48 British Summer Time 22 September 2021

    Nottinghamshire 296 v Yorkshire 73 & 106-1

No breakthrough after tea for Nottinghamshire as the visitors show admirable application.

Adam Lyth is 40 not out off 129 balls as he digs in for his side. Still no Notts bowler has claimed a wicket in this innings.
