  1. No excuses for Durhampublished at 14:59 British Summer Time 22 September 2021

    Durham 140 & 66-6, Gloucestershire 218

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

Durham are not happy with the wicket in Bristol but there are no excuses for some of their batting again today.

The same mistakes are being made in the second innings which we saw in the first.

Paul Coughlin has just tried to drive the last ball of a Zafar Khan over and got caught in the covers for 2. There was no need to play the shot but it meant Durham were six down in their second innings and still 19 behind after beginning with a 78-run deficit.

Khan has caused all kinds of problems with his spin and having taken 5-50 in the first innings he has 4-17 in the second, including David Bedingham, who went LBW for eight to end the season with 1,029 Championship runs.

I am not sure if Gloucestershire will need to bat again. I can't see how this match will make it to day three.

  2. wicket

WICKET Gubbins b Balderson 6published at 14:53 British Summer Time 22 September 2021

    Lancashire 141 v Hampshire 143 & 24-4

Nick Gubbins is now back in the hutch.

George Balderson comes round the wicket and produces an absolute beauty to knock out Gubbins' off-stump.

Goodness me, this match is rocking along. With six wickets in hand, the lead is 26. Although looking at this pitch and with Barker and Abbas to face, no chase is going to be straightforward.

  3. Champagne, Charlie?published at 14:42 British Summer Time 22 September 2021

    Leicestershire 222, Worcestershire 189-3

A couple of wickets have gone down since lunch at New Road, Worcester, where Leicestershire have made their first breakthrough of the day.

They removed Jake Libby for 78, the Worcestershire opener having taken his run tally for the season to 1,073, But the big one the Foxes were really after was nightwatchman Charlie Morris, which came nine overs earlier.

Although not before the Pears last man had had batted throughout the entire morning session in a stand of 125 with Libby and completed his first-ever County Championship half century, at the 90th attempt.

Morris does have another higher first-class score to his name, 53 not out against the Australian tourists at New Road two years ago.

He is also currently clearly in a rich vein of form with the bat, having plundered a ton for Worcestershire Seconds only last month.

But, having worked hard on his batting, this was new ground at New Road for the popular Pears paceman.

  4. wicket

WICKET Alsop c Davies b Bailey 2published at 14:38 British Summer Time 22 September 2021

    Lancashire 141 v Hampshire 143 & 15-3

The action continues at lightning speed at Aigburth and Tom Bailey has his third victim in the second innings.

This ball is a touch short and Tom Alsop goes to cut, but gets a fine edge. Wicketkeeper Alex Davies anticipates it well and takes it in front of first slip.

Bailey has 3-3 and Hampshire only lead by 17.

  5. wicket

    Lammonby c&b Briggs 59published at 14:32 British Summer Time 22 September 2021

    Warwickshire 367, Somerset 104-2

Tom Lammonby's concentration is broken after reaching a 50 stand, his own 50 and the Somerset century and he returns a catch to spinner Danny Briggs.

Warwickshire now just one scalp away from a first bowling point.

New man in is skipper Tom Abell.

Matt Cave: The odds of Notts winning the title are better than you’ve stated. Lancashire v Hampshire could finish a tie. If that happens and Warwickshire fail to beat Somerset, then Notts will be champions. Maybe not likely to happen, but more likely than a draw at Aigburth #bbccricket, external

  7. 50 runs

Half-century for Tom Lammonbypublished at 14:28 British Summer Time 22 September 2021

    Warwickshire 367, Somerset 104-1

Tom Lammonby passes 50 for only the third time in the County Championship this season - but then in the same over survives a big shout against Chris Woakes.

Azhar Ali is still there on 24. The pair have so far put on 68 for the second wicket, to bring up the Somerset century too.

  8. Digging inpublished at 14:28 British Summer Time 22 September 2021

    Nottinghamshire 296 v Yorkshire 73 & 42-0

Not difficult but this opening stand is Yorkshire's best partnership of the match.

Adam Lyth and George Hill have shared eight boundaries in the first 11 overs in the Trent Bridge sunshine. They now trail by 181 runs.

  9. As it standspublished at 14:18 British Summer Time 22 September 2021

With two innings completed in two of the three games in Division One, it's a good moment to show the updated table with only Warwickshire able to collect more bonus points.

    Hampshire - 61.5

    Warwickshire - 59

    Lancashire - 57.5

    Nottinghamshire - 57

The Bears can get three bowling points, which they then turn into a victory would make them Champions, no matter what. Hampshire need to win and Warwicks to take no more than eight wickets in the first 110 overs of Somerset's innings. Lancashire must win and hope that the home side do not win at Edgbaston.

Nottinghamshire must win and hope that there is a draw at Aigburth and Somerset win or draw. Given that 22 wickets have fallen between Lancs and Hants, that feels like a forlorn hope.

  10. 50 runs

50 stand for Lammonby and Azharpublished at 14:17 British Summer Time 22 September 2021

    Warwickshire 367, Somerset 92-1

Somerset going quite sweetly now as Tom Lammonby and Azhar Ali reach their half-century partnership.

Danny Briggs has now bowled two overs. There may be a lot more to come.

And Chris Woakes is now into his third over back into the attack.

  11. wicket

WICKET Crane b Bailey 0published at 14:13 British Summer Time 22 September 2021

    Lancashire 141 v Hampshire 143 & 1-2

The Mason Crane experiment lasts four balls!

Sent in as an auxiliary opener, Tom Bailey's crackerjack delivery is too good for Crane as it moves away to hit the off stump.

As the radio commentators are saying, there is a world of difference between blunting an old ball and fending off a hard, shiny new one.

    Hampshire effectively 3-2.

  12. wicket

WICKET Holland c Bohannon b Bailey 0published at 14:03 British Summer Time 22 September 2021

    Lancashire 141 v Hampshire 143 & 0-1

Here we go, three balls into Hampshire's second innings!

Tom Bailey pitches it up, and as Ian Holland tries to work it to leg but he gets a thick edge as the ball swings away and Josh Bohannon takes a sharp chance at third slip.

There is barely time to take in the news that top-scorer in the first innings, Mason Crane, has been sent in to open!

  13. Nothing much to celebrate, say Essexpublished at 14:00 British Summer Time 22 September 2021

Essex (171) beat Northants (81 and 45) by an innings and 44 runs

Speculation persists among cricket statisticians all over England as to where exactly Northamptonshire's embarrassing capitulation this morning at Chelmsford ranks in the history of shortest County Championship matches.

Their lowest Championship score in 75 years: Bowled out for just 45 half an hour into the fourth session to lose by an innings to an Essex side who had only made 170!

The only thing for sure is that it ensured that Essex finished top of Division Two - and they were even given the Division Two trophy (last won by them when thy got promoted in 2016) to mark it. And that didn't mean much to their stand-in skipper, England batman Dan Lawrence after two County Championship wins in 2017 and 2019 (when they also won the T20 Blast) and the Bob Willis Trophy in 2020.

“We didn’t feel great taking a photo next to the Division Two winners board," he told BBC Radio Essex. "It's not something we’re going to celebrate. We’re a club that wants to be winning Division One.”

“We’ve lost two games of cricket this season and yet we’re finishing seventh. We feel we’re in the top three teams in the country but that’s fine.

"The boys need to stay hungry and understand we’re disappointed even though we’ve finished nicely. We want to be up there trying to win Division One.”

  14. wicket

WICKET Bailey c Holland b Abbas 23published at 13:50 British Summer Time 22 September 2021

    Lancashire 141 all out v Hampshire 143

Lancashire's innings comes to an end when Tom Bailey chips Mohammad Abbas to Ian Holland at short mid-wicket.

A useful contribution from Bailey, though, as he almost took the Red Rose up to parity on first innings, which seemed fanciful at 47-7.

Excellent bowling performance from the visitors with Abbas claiming 5-48 and Barker getting 4-51.

  15. Better luck second time aroundpublished at 13:43 British Summer Time 22 September 2021

    Nottinghamshire 296 v Yorkshire 73 & 0-0

Here come Yorkshire pair Adam Lyth and George Hill. Having been bowled out in under 30 overs, the White Rose need to show some pride in their second innings.

But with Fletcher and Co. hunting wickets, taking this match to a fourth innings will not be an easy task.

  16. wicket

WICKET Fisher c Moores b Paterson 4published at 13:36 British Summer Time 22 September 2021

    Nottinghamshire 296 v Yorkshire 73 all out

The innings is wrapped up when Dane Paterson induces an edge off Matthew Fisher and Tom Moores takes a tidy catch behind the stumps.

    The lead is 223.

Luke Fletcher and Brett Hutton are practising their bowling on the outfield which indicates that Yorkshire will be following on in a few minutes.

  17. wicket

WICKET Bess c Hutton b Evison 12published at 13:30 British Summer Time 22 September 2021

    Nottinghamshire 296 v Yorkshire 73-9

Nottinghamshire pick up where they left off this morning.

Dom Bess decides the slip cordon needs more practice as he guides it in the manner you would see in the warm-up straight to Brett Hutton at first slip.

Joey Evison claims his fourth wicket of the innings.

  18. wicket

WICKET Croft c Dawson b Abbas 40published at 13:28 British Summer Time 22 September 2021

    Lancashire 131-9 v Hampshire 143

Steven Croft carves Mohammad Abbas down through third man for four to take him to 40, the best score in the game.

But when he tries to hit Abbas over the top, he succeeds only in skying it and Liam Dawson takes the catch at mid-off.

A fourth wicket for Abbas, but the lead is just 12 runs.

  19. Change of approachpublished at 13:26 British Summer Time 22 September 2021

    Warwickshire 367, Somerset 40-1

Change of ends for the Bears bowlers after lunch.

Liam Norwell comes back on at the Pavilion End, Tim Bresnan replaces Chris Woakes End at the City End - but no further breakthrough yet for Warwickshire.

Surely only a matter of time though.
