Those cricket fans hoping for a last-over thriller after five days of enthralling action in the Bob Willis Trophy final might have been disappointed to see Lancashire 12-6 in the ninth over at Lord's.

Warwickshire's dominance on the opening day suggests this match will 'go short' but the action was still eminently watchable (or listenable).

Craig Miles (5-28) and Liam Norwell were outstanding with the new ball and the unbroken stand of 120 between Rob Yates and Dom Sibley - helped by a couple of dropped catches - has tightened their grip on the game.

What will happen on day two? Join us tomorrow at 10:15 to find out.

The official word from the umpires is out, there will be no more play at the home of cricket. Rob Yates will begin day two on 69 not out for Warwickshire, with opening partner Dom Sibley on 49.

    Lancashire 78 v Warwickshire 120-0 - rain stopped play

They've been off for about half an hour now at Lord's.

It's hard to see how conditions could improve enough for umpires David Millns and Mike Burns to order more play.

Only 44 overs were possible on day one of last year's inaugural Bob Willis Trophy final between Essex and Somerset, so we've done better than that, with 61.5 bowled - and it's five days later in the calendar.

Raining at Lord'spublished at 17:15 British Summer Time 28 September 2021

    Lancashire 78 v Warwickshire 120-0

Bad light has now given way to rain...looks like Dom Sibley will have to wait to try and complete a half-century for Warwickshire. He is 49 not out and Rob Yates has 69.

Spare a thought today for Lancashire's Luke Wood, who made 46 in their sorry first-innings total, and then bowled better than his 0-23 from eight overs might suggest.

The confidence of winning the Championship has just rolled on to today (for Warwickshire). Their bowling was outstanding and challenged the techniques of the Lancashire batsmen."

  7. Bad light stops play at Lord'spublished at 17:02 British Summer Time 28 September 2021

    Lancashire 78 v Warwickshire 120-0

The floodlights are beaming out across the Lord's outfield, the clouds are dark and the players are heading off for bad light.

It would be a huge surprise if they re-emerged.

Lancashire are sticking in there, trying to be patient and create a chance - and hoping one (wicket) might lead to two or three."

  9. Best of the seasonpublished at 17:00 British Summer Time 28 September 2021

    Lancashire 78 v Warwickshire 120-0

With a single from Rob Yates, this now overtakes the 119 the pair put on last week against Somerset to make it Warwickshire's best opening partnership of the season.

Who says it's impossible opening the batting in September?

Let's see how close Alex is to getting that prediction right. Both teams will probably be happy to call it a day early.

We could carry on until 6pm, but that is not happening.

However long the players stay out, though, Rob Yates will carry on cashing in on loose deliveries. But the ball after playing for four, he's beaten by a beauty

We'll leave you to interpret what is going through the mind of Lancashire captain Dane Vilas in this one.

  15. Bears' advantage mounting uppublished at 16:40 British Summer Time 28 September 2021

    Lancashire 78 v Warwickshire 108-0

    Dom SibleyImage source, PA Media

Dom Sibley gets in on the act when he steers Luke Wood to the cover boundary. Warwickshire's lead is already over 30.

There are potentially 32 overs left in the day, so their lead could get into three figures by close of play.

Wood then thinks he has Rob Yates LBW with an excellent in-swinger. Umpire David Millns shakes his head - that would definitely have been reviewed if DRS was in use this game.

Would it have been hitting leg-stump or umpire's call? Irrelevant really, as it's not out.

100 for Warwickshirepublished at 16:35 British Summer Time 28 September 2021

    Lancashire 78 v Warwickshire 103-0

Rob Yates gets another four, courtesy of a slash over slips. Luke Wood is the unfortunate bowler again.

Dane Vilas then tries desperately to run out Yates with a direct hit but his throw is well off target. His anguished face sums up Lancashire's predicament.

Then when Tom Bailey's radar is wonky, Yates sends another ball to the boundary through midwicket.

  18. An Ashes winter for Yates?published at 16:24 British Summer Time 28 September 2021

    Lancashire 78 v Warwickshire 92-0

    Rob YatesImage source, PA Media

On Sky, Ian Ward and Nasser Hussain are discussing whether England may find room for Rob Yates or Dom Sibley in an enlarged squad to go to Australia this winter.

With four hundreds and 793 runs in the Championship this season, 22-year-old Yates is forwarding his case.

A century in a showcase match at Lord's would come in handy. Traditionally, big performances in big matches in August and September have often caught the selectors' eyes for winter tours.

  19. 50 runs

50 for Rob Yatespublished at 16:17 British Summer Time 28 September 2021

    Lancashire 78 v Warwickshire 90-0

A squirt down towards third man brings up four and a half-century for Rob Yates.

He has had a little bit of fortune, but with ten boundaries he has cashed in on loose deliveries, but his positive manner at the crease has been well rewarded.

After a century last week, he looks full of confidence.

  20. Not lucky Lancashirepublished at 16:14 British Summer Time 28 September 2021

    Lancashire 78 v Warwickshire 86-0

Tom Bailey is back on to bowl and he thinks he has Rob Yates LBW straight up, but the umpire Mike Burns gives the signal that it was too high.

Yates almost wanders out of his crease and the ball hits the stumps but that is also not out.

For Lancashire, when your luck's out...
