  2. NZ 246-3published at 87 overs

    Conway 136, Nicholls 46

It's a good first over from Anderson, every ball probing Conway's defence. One whistles over the top of off stump, another causes a half-hearted lbw appeal and Conway almost plays on from the last.

There's a huff and a puff from Jimmy as he wanders to his fielding position.

Conway looks the type of player that knows exactly how to bat.

  4. NZ 246-3published at 86.1 overs

James Anderson's first ball leaps at Conway and hits him at the glove. Can we have Wood from the other end please?

  5. NZ 246-3published at 86 overs

It's going to be Jimmy Anderson to start proceedings.

Unsurprisingly, the cameras focus on Ollie Robinson as the players emerge.

Hi Jamz, can you play When a Fire Starts to Burn by Disclosure? Massive tune and reminds me of being at uni. Don't think I can party like that any more but might give it a go when lockdown ends!

England will try and restrict that run rate again and the best way they'll feel to do that is to bowl Broad and Anderson for the first six overs. I'd start with one of them from the Pavilion End and then Wood from the Nursery End.

While England are behind in the wickets, if they can claim a few this morning, they can get back into the game. I don't see why Mark Wood can't open the bowling this morning.

England bowler Mark Wood on Devon Conway: "Conway played some amazing shots, especially on debut. To play the way that he did was outstanding. Today, hopefully, he's a little more tired than we are and we can get him early on."

BBC Weather's Nick Miller: "There are some showers and thunderstorms that will build today and into tonight, then spread northwards. It looks like the bulk of the storms will stay off to the east.

"There's still a lot of uncertainty about that part of the forecast but it is a little more likely that there will be some showers overnight. There is the potential for some interruptions tomorrow. Today, though, it is all looking fine - some sunshine and a breeze."

They do indeed. England do, at least, have a relatively new ball as they search for wickets this morning. It's only six overs old.

Joe Root led the chat in the team huddle this morning. It was noticeable to me that after Root stopped speaking the one player who received a pat on the back from coach Chris Silverwood was Ollie Robinson.

It won't be easy for him to put all the controversy out of his mind today.

  16. Wood says Robinson will 'try to focus on cricket'published at 10:39 British Summer Time 3 June 2021

England pace bowler Mark Wood has spoken about the Robinson controversy this morning.

"Last night was pretty tough for him and the whole team, to hear that news," Wood told BBC Sport.

"He'll try to concentrate on the cricket today and get his mind fixed on what is an important morning for us.

"Mentally, if his head is in that space, he can do the business again like he did yesterday."

England v New Zealand: Ollie Robinson apologises for racist and sexist tweets

The day was somewhat overshadowed, however, by historic tweets by England's Ollie Robinson which emerged during play.

The tweets were posted in 2012 when Robinson was 18 and 19 and were of a racist and sexist nature.

After play, the bowler read a statement to apologise.

"I am embarrassed by the racist and sexist tweets that I posted over eight years ago, which have today become public," said Robinson.

"I am sorry, and I have certainly learned my lesson today."

The ECB said it will begin a full investigation as part of the disciplinary process.

  18. Conway hits ton on debut to thwart Englandpublished at 10:32 British Summer Time 3 June 2021

As fans returned to a home England Test for the first time since 2019, Joe Root's side were frustrated by a top-class Test debut innings.

Opener Devon Conway thwarted England's bowlers and batted throughout the day, ending 136 not out.

England, perhaps hampered by their team selection, only managed three wickets, with two of those being taken by one of their own debutants, Ollie Robinson.

New Zealand will resume this morning on 246-3.
