  2. 'Really happy with the way Robinson performed'published at 18:50 British Summer Time 3 June 2021

England batting coach Graham Thorpe on Ollie Robinson: "Yesterday was a hard day, it tested his personality and character. How he responded today, we were really pleased. We have to support him as a player in our team we were really happy with the way he performed today."

There were familiar failings for England at the top of the order. Dom Sibley was dismissed for a duck and Zak Crawley for two.

England were 18-2 but an impressive unbeaten stand between Rory Burns, who has 59, and Joe Root, not out on 42, helped England recover.

  4. 'England can't keep asking Root to dig them out'published at 18:47 British Summer Time 3 June 2021

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

Full credit to England. They could have had a mentality of this being a really long day. With the bat in hand, you lose two early wickets, which is quite a common trend in this Test match team - you can't keep asking the England captain to go out there and dig you out of a hole. It's been an issue for them for quite a while now.

  5. 'We're really pleased'published at 18:44 British Summer Time 3 June 2021

BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra

England batting coach Graham Thorpe on TMS: "We said yesterday that although we only picked up three wickets, we never let them get away. We knew if we made inroads today we could come back in. To bowl New Zealand out from where we were at the start of the day, we're really pleased."

  6. 'England magnificent in the morning session'published at 18:43 British Summer Time 3 June 2021

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

It's been a really interesting day. I think the pitch has played the main part of it. Yesterday we thought it would be a 450 first innings score but for whatever reason, the ball started doing things today. England were magnificent in the morning session.

New Zealand's Devon Conway debutant opener scored exactly 200 of their 378.

His knock was simply brilliant. He became just the seventh man to score a double century on debut.

He was eventually the last batter out, run out by Ollie Pope.

How would Robinson have felt at 11am this morning? After a tumultuous 24 hours, what we saw on the field was again impressive. He looked the part of a Test quality bowler.

Ollie Robinson took another two wickets too to end with four. He would have had five on debut, but for a dropped catch by Stuart Broad.

It was another great day of Test cricket. New Zealand began in command at 246-3 but England did pretty well to bowl them out for 378 in the afternoon.

Mark Wood got things rolling with three wickets in the morning session.

Well England can be pretty happy with their day. Rory Burns allows the final ball to pass into the gloves of BJ Watling.

After bowling New Zealand out they've made a decent enough start in reply.

Root has an infuriating habit of missing a short delivery and then smiling angelically at the bowler.

Tim Southee begins the final over of the day. New Zealand have just got the ball moving a little.

If Wagner bowled all day then the over-rate would be spot on. He's having to wait to bowl while Root settles himself.

  19. Eng 111-2published at 42 overs

    Burns 59, Root 42

A few members of the crowd, pint in hand, are trying to get a chant going late in the day. You'd imagine things will be a lot more vocal when we move on to Edgbaston next week.

Root plays and misses on two occasions to Wagner and then, frustratingly for the bowler, grins.

The essential difference between a mullet and just having long hair is that a mullet is short at the front and sides. See Billy Ray Cyrus.
