It is very unlike Root to be kept quiet. He's usually very good at just nurdling one here and there.

Burns 29, Root 9
Yet again, Colin de Grandhomme whistles one past Root's bat. Burns look far more comfortable at the other end. We all know what will happen now...
I'm sure Neil Wagner is a lovely man but he looks like he'd like to punch every batsman he bowls to when he runs in. It's a proper grumpy scowl.

Colin de Grandhomme is nothing more than a slightly quicker Jonathan Trott but he continuingly causes problems. Root is beaten as he wanders down the pitch in defence.
Neil Wagner is coming on. If his batting earlier is anything to go by this will be fun.

Mark Burt: New Zealand look a proper Test team. No obvious weaknesses, a clear esprit de corps, superbly led by the best batter in the world. England on the other hand still appear to be a team individuals lacking direction or identity.
Burns 24, Root 9
Root's hand comes off the bat again in response to a spiting ball from Southee. New Zealand are great, aren't they? Southee is one of my favourite bowlers in the world.

It's obviously hurting Joe Root. Every time he hits the ball he's taking his bottom hand off the bat and wringing it.
Root takes off his glove again after driving the first ball after the stoppage. He's definitely not comfortable.
Another delivery moves off the pitch like a Shane Warne leggie.

That was a really nasty blow. Kane Williamson has gone over to see if he's alright.
England's physio twists and pokes the middle finger of Root's right hand. I think Root is going to carry on.

Oh, this won't be good for England. I don't like that look on Root's face...
CdG is causing Joe Root problems. First a ball squares him up and then one leaps and hits Root on the finger.
This has hurt the England skipper. The physio jogs on.

There's not a lot to report from Tim Southee's latest over. Burns takes a single before Root defends.
Back over to big Colin.
Burns 21, Root 7
De Grandhomme got Joe Root out in the World Cup final on this very ground with some of these floaty seamers. That may be why he's on early here.
On goes his floppy hat at the end of the over... thankfully.
De Grandhomme runs in, curls flapping behind him in the breeze, and Joe Root pulls away at the last moment. Was he distracted by the quite incredible hair? It looks even more remarkable now its not half-hidden by the helmet.
Mr Mullet himself, Colin de Grandhomme, is going to bowl some of his trundlers.

That kept very low. England won't want to see that.
Burns 21, Root 7
Ah now that's a nice shot - Rory Burns driving Southee through the covers to the fence.
I was just looking up some of Burns' stats while listening to the soothing voice of Kumar Sangakkara at tea. He has seven 50+ scores for Surrey this season. Decent nick.
A ball later in the over scurries horribly low, passing Burns by the boot laces.
New Zealand have been very threatening with this new ball. This graphic shows why.
There's no let-up. Tim Southee continues after the break.

Keith Lawton: Death and taxes are certainties in life so is England being 20 for 2.
