Joe Root is doing a good containing job for England, but there's no real threat from the skipper.

He walks off with his hands on his head, after Will Young turns around the corner for a single. He was perhaps a little late on it, but Root is searching a bit there.

During the drinks break one of the groundstaff ran on to repaint the crease line. You know the drill. Bucket of paint, long stick. He got on, did the job and off again in a couple of minutes. If you've ever done it at your club, you'll know it takes mortals at least half an hour.

  3. NZ 88-1published at 30 overs

    Trail by 215

Devon Conway picks up a couple more with a glance into the leg-side.

The clouds have started to get a bit darker over Edgbaston and the groundstaff are semi-hovering around the boundary. One of them is deep in conversation with Ashley Giles.

A good, battling start by New Zealand - it hasn't been easy.

There's just a hint of turn. It didn't carry anywhere near Burns.

Oh! Joe Root gets a lovely bit of dip on one, and it draws Will Young forward, and there's half a chance for Rory Burns as slip as a thin edge goes off pad.

That'll be drinks. Once again New Zealand have won that hour. They are on top in this Test.

Conway has been particualrly dismissive of anything full so far in this innings.

Hello! Some serious pace and fire from Mark Wood has James Bracey leaping around, but he does very well to gather it. He looks up, either at the changing room or the big screen, to either get some acknowledgement or watch it back.

He did well there. He looks nervous, though. His Test career hasn't gone to plan so far.

The extra pace of Wood definitely makes batsmen think. Devon Conway has hardly done anything wrong in two Tests but is late on a drive.

Double change for England as Mark Wood, who only bowled two overs for 13 pre-lunch, replaces Olly Stone.

Devon Conway has a penchant for big scores - he has a triple hundred in first-class cricket.

Devon Conway picks up a single off the final ball to keep the strike.

Joe Root will rattle through some overs at least.

Joe Root is a good bowler to left-handers. This is a good move by him.

There will not be a huge amount of turn, but he will try to skid it on and get Devon Conway out lbw.

If it does turn, England will miss not picking Jack Leach.

There is a little bit of rough outside Devon Conway's off stump but he doesn't seem too fussed as he drives for a couple to move to another half-century.

Test cricket hard? It hasn't been for this man so far.

There's a reason Alastair Cook captained England 59 times.

    Joe Root is on.

Will Young blocks out a maiden from James Anderson.

Anderson and Olly Stone have bowled unchanged since lunch now.

There's murmurs that Mark Wood is struggling with a niggle on the tele.

Did England get their team wrong if Joe Root is having to bowl 26 overs into day two?

    Probably...

Will Young is starting to look more settled now as he climbs into a cut that flies to the boundary.

This drop from Joe Root has already cost England 14 runs...
