A bit short and wide from Stuart Broad and Will Young just climbs into the cut and crunches it away. Joe Root's drop has cost England 25 runs already.

There's half an appeal for lbw off the final delivery, but even Broad is saying "I think that's going over". Which, in all honesty, probably means it's going a good foot or so over.

Devon Conway has been superb hasn't he? He absolutely crunches a sweep, resulting in a scream of anguish from Joe Root.

He then plays a beautiful on-drive that the diving Olly Stone can't cut off.

Simon Doull is trying to get the left-hander a gig in the Hundred on the tele. Southern Brave are after an opener after David Warner pulled out.

  7. NZ 97-1published at 36 overs

Just a single off Mark Wood's fifth over of this spell. Is that going to be his lot for now? Joe Root and England will want to use him in short sharp bursts.

Devon Conway and Will Young have deflated the England bowlers, and they've done a good job of deflating the Hollies Stand too. It's gone quiet in the last half an hour or so.

Apart from a plague of locusts I can't see how England get Devon Conway out.

I've not seen someone look this assured at the start of their Test career in a long while.

    A maiden from Joe Root.

James Bracey has just chirped: "This is exhibition bowling, Rooty."

I mean, there's plenty of control, but it's not threatening. I don't want to say it's like playing in an exhibition game for the Kiwi batters, but they'll have had tougher spells.

Mark Wood has bowled with a lot more control, and vigour through the crease, in this spell so far.

Devon Conway is currently averaging 139.50 in Test cricket. Enough to send a shiver down the spine.

"Yes, Rooty, I'm really, really liking this", says James Bracey.

He hesitated halfway through, so the conviction was somewhat lacking.

I get the impression that Bracey still can't quite believe he's playing at this level. He looks and feels very nervous to me.

At this venue, if you get one wicket you can get on a roll. England have just got to believe.

I'm going to be completely honest, in the hope it brings about a change of fortune.

England don't look like taking a wicket.

Devon Conway and Will Young look pretty comfortable.
