How important is this drop from Joe Root going to be prove?

Will Young was only on seven when he spilled the regulation chance off Olly Stone. He's now on 40, so it has already proved pretty costly.

It's been about vigilance and accumulation. They've played the odd attacking shot but it's more of the battle between bat and ball that has dominated that session.

Will Young plays with low hands. He frustrates James Anderson as one catches the outside edge but goes down runs to the third man boundary.

Once again that is without doubt New Zealand's session. They've added 87 runs and not lost a wicket in those two hours.

    England have been meh.

That over is going to be bowled by James Anderson.

The short-pitched Mark Wood tactic got one over. Successful.

Devon Conway has just become the 10th player in Test history to score 300-plus runs in his first two Tests.

  6. NZ 126-1published at 42 overs

Stuart Broad is constantly changing his delivery point on the crease as England search for that elusive breakthrough. He's hitting the pitch hard as Devon Conway has to shake his hand after blocking a delivery back down the pitch.

We've got time for one more over before tea.

A pitch invader (not a streaker because he was clothed) has had his moment of fame. He was doing a reasonable job of evading some burly security staff until he slipped on the boundary marker. He was then pounced upon, muscled away and is now set to take a serious hit to the bank balance.

Stuart Broad and England are going to get a change of ball.

I'm surprised it has taken them this long to try.

New Zealand are now the first team since 2017 to reach 40 overs in the first innings of a Test in England with only one wicket down.

Nine off the over as that first-ball boundary is followed by five singles.

Is the pitch quick enough for Mark Wood and England to turn to this tactic? Devon Conway and Will Young were able to play that over with ease, with the ball just getting up between hip and chest height.

  11. NZ 123-1published at 40.3 overs

    England have got fielders everywhere.

Zak Crawley is at third slip on the boundary, they've got three men out on the hook.

Will Young takes it on as well and picks up a single.

Brilliant shot by Conway - two men on the boundary behind square and he's comfortably bisected them.

  13. NZ 121-1published at 40.1 overs

Chest height from Mark Wood and Devon Conway pulls away to the fence.

Joe Root has gone back into the armoury cupboard and picked out Mark Wood again.

This is the same end as his first spell, but different to the five-over one that only finished about 10-15 minutes ago.

Ollie Pope is going in under the lid, there's a deep fine leg, a deep backward square, a deep square leg. Wood is going to pepper Devon Conway and Will Young.

Fast bowling doesn't seem to be doing much on this pitch and if there is no swing then what do England have in their armoury? Especially if Joe Root can't tie up an end and New Zealand keep scoring easily off him.

The first full away series that I live texted was England's tour to New Zealand in late 2019. For large periods of that tour it felt like England would never take a wicket ever again on the placid drop-in pitches.

I'm getting a strong sense of deja vu.

Jeremy Coney said every one in four innings, Devon Conway will get you.

Well Jeremy, it's two in three at the moment.

  18. NZ 116-1published at 39 overs

Devon Conway and Will Young have now shared 101 for the second wicket - Conway has 63 of them.

England could really do with a breakthrough. The Edgbaston crowd are slowly ramping up the volume. They know their side need a lift.
