  2. Hants 50-3 v Somersetpublished at 7 overs

So can Joe Weatherley take advantage to put something on the board here for Hampshire?

    150 the target perhaps.

Dual spin now with Lewis Goldsworthy.

  3. The James Vince factor?published at 11:33 British Summer Time 18 September 2021

    Hampshire 49-3 Somerset

    Ged Scott
    BBC Sport at Edgbaston

Although a 'sell-out', Edgbaston is still only half full as there was a bit of traffic around Birmingham this morning - and all the Sussex and Kent hordes haven't turned up yet for their 2.30 appointment.

But there are unmistakable murmurs around the ground at the start Somerset have made.

For battle-hardened James Vince watchers, don't feel too aggrieved at him lasting only seven balls.

He lasted just eight in The Hundred final and nine in the T20 quarter-final against Notts - and his team still won both of those.

But then one of his Hundred team-mates that day in August for the Southern Braves was Somerset's Craig Overton and another three (Tymal Mills, Chris Jordan and George Garton) are here today for Sussex, so read into it what you want, in fact!

  4. Hants 50-3 v Somersetpublished at 7 overs

Marchant de Lange the guilty fielder that cost Somerset their wicket.

Spin straight after the powerplay and a tidy set from Roelof van der Merwe.

  5. Hants 46-3 v Somersetpublished at 6 overs

Last ball of the powerplay and Joe Weatherley tries to take it leg side.

But it's almost straight up and Tom Banton skips forward to take the skier!

Hold on he's not going anywhere yet...

We seem to be having a check at the number of fieldsmen outside the ring.

    And it's a no-ball! Weatherley is reprieved.

And then takes the free-hit down the ground for six!

Possibly a big moment. Very very dozy from Somerset.

There's a little bit of gesticulating from the batsman to suggest he's spotted something. The umpires are checking to see if it is legit.

He's not walking. He's pretty confident something was not right. He's taking guard.

If he's played that shot on the basis he thought it was a free hit, that's very clever batting.

These sort of events can throw a spanner in for the team. Marchant de Lange is going to be very disappointed he hasn't moved into the right position.

If you lose three or more wickets in the powerplay batting first, your chance of winning is 25%.

If you lose zero, one or two wickets, it is 52% so that's quite a big difference.

Good news for Somerset, not so good for Hampshire...

  8. Hants 32-3 v Somersetpublished at 5 overs

Four more for Joe Weatherley, squirting a full ball past short-third man.

But two dots to end the over and Hampshire remain in trouble.

  9. 'Powerplay in Somerset's favour'published at 11:22 British Summer Time 18 September 2021

    Peter Trego
Notts Outlaws all-rounder on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra

Nice delivery, in a good area, maybe a hint of movement but it looks like Prest just played all around that one.

He hasn't really covered that particularly well and it's disappointing for the young man to have such a short stay at the crease.

That wicket certainly turns the powerplay into Somerset's favour.

  10. Hants 26-3 v Somersetpublished at 4 overs

Until then it was a good over for Hampshire with Joe Weatherley hoiking another over deep square for six and pumping four down the ground.

WICKET Prest b Davey 0published at 3.6 overs

    Hants 26-3 v Somerset

It was a better over for Hampshire but they then lose another wicket last ball.

One nips in from Josh Davey, gets through Tom Prest and clips his off bail. Perfect.

Golden duck on Finals Day the poor lad.

  12. Hants 15-2 v Somersetpublished at 3 overs

Couple down but Joe Weatherley responds by going down on one knee to sweep over square leg for six!

Man back there but he takes him on and gets all of it.

But another great set for Somerset.

I'm all for innovation but inside a power play? There hasn't been any seam, movement and Toby Albert will go back to the pavilion thinking why haven't I tried to hit that back over the bowler's head?

Fair play for trying it but the execution was lacking and that was his downfall.

  14. wicket

WICKET Vince c Banton b Overton 2published at 2.2 overs

    Hants 8-2 v Somerset

    Huge moment!

James Vince staying leg side trying to cut a ball perhaps not wide enough to do so.

He nicks it behind and Somerset have not just a second wicket but a massive blow.

  15. wicket

WICKET Albert c Banton b Davey 5published at 1.6 overs

    Hants 8-1 v Somerset

Toby Albert cracks one just past cover point but pressure is building with timing difficult.

He tries a paddle sweep last ball of the over and only flicks it to the wicketkeeper.

  17. Hants 2-0 v Somersetpublished at 1 over

    Very tidy from Overton, C.

But then a big chance goes down!

James Vince miscues a leg side clip, chips it back to the bowler but Overton lets it slip through his hands.

Edgbaston half-full at best so far. Always the case for the first semi.
