West Indies don't look too down after the miss, a good sprawling stop at square leg preventing Lees getting a couple.

As I write that Roach goes full and wide, an invitation even the stubborn Alex Lees can't turn down. It's not the prettiest four but they don't give such marks in the scorebook.

    That's the fifty partnership.

  2. Eng 53-1published at 35 overs

    Lees 18, Root 35

Joe Root would rank top of a list of 'things I wouldn't want to drop', slightly ahead a historic vase at the National History Museum. The England skipper defends a maiden from Holder as he returns to his groove.

Those chances are never easy to take down the leg-side, but on a flat pitch like this, and against Joe Root, you have to take everything going.

  4. Eng 53-1published at 34 overs

That's a second life for Root.

It wasn't an easy catch but I am not sure Da Silva moved that well to the ball. He almost tumbled to it rather than side-stepping like a prime Rafa Nadal.

In, and out. Joshua da Silva could not quite hold on. There's real disappointment for Kemar Roach who has been toiling away but that wasn't an easy catch. That would have been a big wicket for West Indies - we know how good Joe Root is.

He got there quite comfortably but couldn't quite hold on. Da Silva will be disappointed with himself.

  6. dropped catch

Root dropped on 34published at 33.1 overs

Down! Kemar Roach has his hands on the pitch, bent over in despair. No wonder, it's Joe Root.

The England captain has flicked one down the leg side. Keeper Joshua da Silva dives across, gets a glove there but fails to hang on.

  7. Eng 52-1published at 33 overs

    Lees 18, Root 34

Chris Gayle has made his way down to the DJ booth. I doubt he's shy in giving some advice. A moment later the TV camera picks out Mike Gatting watching on. They are two very different ex-international cricketers.

Alex Lees lets his 100th ball go outside off, clearly unflustered despite a scroll down our feed during lunch.

The outfield is much slower here in Barbados - the grass is thicker and doesn't run downhill like it did in Antigua.

  9. Eng 52-1published at 32 overs

Joe Root has timed it like a dream right from the start today. Kraigg Brathwaite has to get his skates on to a pull just the gentlest of pushes through the covers back inside the boundary.

  10. Eng 50-1published at 31 overs

"Wait, wait - yeah, yeah" says one Yorkshireman to another in the middle. This time it's Alex Lees, ending a long run of dot balls he had faced. These two could communicate in the middle in fluent Yorkshire I imagine.

  11. Eng 48-1published at 30.1 overs

Jason Holder begins the afternoon proceedings in bright, sunny conditions that will have some of the thousands of England fans reaching for sun cream - or a beer.

Elsewhere, the biggest cricket story of the day has to be the incredible draw between Pakistan and Australia in Karachi.

Skipper Babar Azam hit an incredible 196 for the hosts as they batted almost two days to save the Test.

He saw off for 425 balls and more than 10 hours as the hosts survived 171.4 overs to end 443-7, Mohammad Rizwan making 104 not out.

In total Babar batted for 603 minutes, making his knock the second longest in the fourth innings of a Test after former England captain Michael Atherton's famous 185 not out against South Africa in 1995, which lasted 643 minutes.

    Ridiculous.

There was one moment that, on reflection, looks to have been a stroke of fortune for England captain Joe Root.

When he was on 23 West Indies went up for a half-hearted appeal after a delivery from Jason Holder.

The replays were not 100% conclusive but the technology did seem to suggest Root inside-edged the ball onto pad. It was then taken by wicketkeeper Joshua da Silva.

West Indies had already burned one review which will have played a part in their decision.
