A slow burner of a day in Barbados which came to life in the final session. Dan Lawrence will be playing that shot over and over again in his head you would imagine.

"Another captain's innings from Joe Root as his side make their quiet steps on the road to recovery following their Ashes defeat," is the assessment of my colleague Matthew Henry in his verdict from day one at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown.

You can read his report here...

    The scorecard is here.

And the Test Match Special podcast looking back on day one will be available later here.

That pretty much wraps things up for our live text commentary We'll be back at 13:45 (GMT) tomorrow with coverage of day two.

    Bye for now.

Dave Foot: Dan Lawrence was playing with the same freedom and attacking intent as the previous 91 runs' worth. Nothing changed just because it didn't work that time. We can lament he got out, but he was playing the situation and was the driving force behind a dominant session.

  3. 'Root sets the example'published at 21:38 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March 2022

Marcus Trescothick, England batting coach, speaking to BT Sport, said: "A great day. Really positive day for us. I'm really disappointed for Dan Lawrence given how positively he played today. But overall we're very happy where we are.

"I think we had a great platform today with the combination of Joe Root and Lawrence to put the West Indies bowlers under pressure. The scoreboard ticked along in the afternoon and then again in the evening session.

"Joe has the discipline and approach to the way he is going about his business and sets the example to everyone in English cricket with his hunger and desire. He's great to watch."

Although they didn't get the rewards they deserved, West Indies showed versatility as a bowling attack on a flat track. It was a big tick in their box.

Andy Knowles: Gutted for Dan Lawrence to get out at the end of the day who battered brilliantly. Very good day for England and good to dig in with the bat. A lot of good work from Alex Lees to enable Joe Root and Lawrence to put a very good partnership.

Dan Lawrence came to the middle and really brought impetus to England's innings. He times the ball naturally well and the scoring rate increases. He played fluently and as nicely through the off side. He played some lovely drives today.

What a milestone for Joe Root today with 25 Test tons for the England skipper. What a player. As soon as he got that reprieve when Joshua da Silva dropped him down the leg side, you felt he was going to make them pay.

That was a masterful and imperious knock from him.

Dan Lawrence probably thought he could get the nine runs he needed this evening for his maiden Test hundred after back-to-back boundaries off Jason Holder!

But seriously, he'll be feeling pretty rubbish after that. He stomped back to the dressing room leaving Joe Root in his wake.

Dan Lawrence showing his inexperience here. Maybe a bit trigger happy. Painful but he will learn!

England's promising 'red-ball reset' continues. A dominant first day which began badly at 4-1 but ends with them well placed to build an imposing first-innings score tomorrow.

The partnership between Joe Root and Dan Lawrence is the best England have seen this winter. Root will grab the headlines, but Lawrence was just as eye-catching until his late dismissal.

Jason Holder deserves some credit for drawing Dan Lawrence into that. West Indies fought hard for that third wicket. It's a shame for Lawrence as I'm a sucker for a good story so would have loved him to have got a hundred.

Dan Lawrence played beautifully, he deserved a hundred there. He struck two beautiful cover drives in that over - I expect he'll be replaying that one that got him out for a long time yet.

Oh Dan, what have you done.

After a brilliant innings Lawrence tosses away his opportunity to come back and make his first Test century tomorrow off the penultimate ball of the day.

An expansive cover drive off Jason Holder is held by skipper Kraigg Brathwaite at cover.

    Deary me.

  18. Eng 236-2published at 89.4 overs

Dan Lawrence is able to see off Jason Holder's two three balls without any alarm. He then unfurls a glorious front-foot drive to smoke Holder to the boundary for four drawing applause from his England team-mates.

He follows it with an equally good drive straight down the ground for back-to-back boundaries.

    Lawrence up to 91 now.

Kemar Roach's legs are pumping as he strains every sinew to get one more England wicket before the close.

He lets out a yelp as his fourth delivery is wide and is left alone by Dan Lawrence before he clips one to fine leg for a single leaving Joe Root with one delivery to face, which he does easily.

So far so good for England as they edge towards stumps.

  20. Eng 235-2published at 88.0 overs

Jason Holder ambles back to his mark. There's a hint of swing in his fifth delivery but Joe Root opens the face and picks up another single.

Final ball of the over and Dan Lawrence shuffles across his stumps and whips the ball to leg. He now has 82, eclipsing his best of 81 versus New Zealand at Edgbaston last summer.
