Alex Thomas: That’s a frustrating knock from Alex Lees… grafting to get a start, but not kicking on. Pitch seems fairly benign yet hard to score on. This could be a key innings for Dan Lawrence now with the skipper well set, yet again.

  2. Eng 81-2published at 46 overs

Some good fielding in the gully keeps Lawrence on nought.

Joe Root and Alex Lees thought for a long while about a review for that dismissal. It was a good job they didn't go for it. Three reds.

But a ball after the England captain reached fifty Alex Lees falls. He goes back to a gentle delivery from the left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul but misses. It looks plumb in front and up goes the finger.

Lees' innings ends at 30 runs from 138 balls.

Another day. Another Joe Root fifty.

I wonder whether the drinks break will be the cue for England and Joe Root to press on just a little.

Veerasammy Permaul returns to the attack with his spin.

We're halfway through the day and England have 79 runs on the board. Time for a drink.

The bowling has been tidy, the outfield is slow... this is a painstaking opening to England's innings. Clearly Lees needs to find his way, and that's fine, he needs to settle down into Test cricket. He hasn't offered a chance yet - but they'll have to play a little more positively as the afternoon wears on.

The pitch-side swimming pool was empty earlier but now there are 10 or so supporters in there sipping on a drink or two. Much like the cricket, it all looks very sedate rather than anything else the 'party stand' name would suggest.

Kev Mcveigh: There's a balance between caution and reckless that openers have to tread. Lees scoring at 1.1 per over is too far beyond reasonable caution.

Enthused by that bouncer clattering into Lees' grille, West Indies look like they're going to keep on with the short stuff. Joseph is hurling it down there but Lees flicks away into the leg-side before leaving another which Da Silva has to scramble to prevent going for byes.

Alex Lees hasn't played this one well, however. Jayden Seales bangs the ball in short and the left-handed opener ducks right into it. On comes the physio for the concussion check. Lees looks OK.

Tom Watson: My favourite thing about this Alex Lees innings is that he got out twice in a similar way in the first Test, and made an adjustment to his technique to avoid it happening again. That's the difference between him and Dom Sibley.

And people always try to tell me the olden days were better...

Joe Root, meanwhile, is continuing his saunter towards becoming England's greatest ever. Another drive. Another four. Alzarri Joseph glares in response.

Martin Moran: Alex Lees is auditioning for the Chris Tavare role. Tavare once scored 35 runs in five-and-a-half hours from 240 balls in 1982, so he'll need to touch the brakes a bit.

How bad was the smell, Phil? Are there words to do it justice?

A boundary to Root, a lovely clip off the toes, brings the England fans and their trumpeter to life.

My most professional pre-season to date is complete; bats is sanded & oiled, with new scuff sheet & grip applied. I've aired out my pads and helmet (why didn't I do this in September!?), and had a cheeky slice of cake because I've got nets tonight.

Joseph's comeback over is interrupted by a classic from cricket's bingo card - the ball being put through those metal rings.

Joseph winds up the pace but Lees is able to easily duck a bouncer. It's another maiden.

I agree, Charlie. Yes, he could score a bit quicker but he's still there.

Holder, gold chains hanging from his neck, joins the dots again. Alzarri Joseph is coming back at the other end.

Charlie Wetton: All want the openers to score runs but as an opener, you have a unique job. Rather have Lees score 100 off 300+ balls than a brisk run a ball 50. Priorities matter when opening the batting.
