Alzarri Joseph is into the attack now as Kraigg Brathwaite switches things up in search of a breakthrough.

A slightly awkward hanging of the bat outside off stump from Ben Stokes to Joseph's fifth ball and he toe ends one into the ground which deflects through to the slip cordon.

Final ball of the over and Joseph attempts to cramp Stokes for room and he jabs it down into the pitch and is like a cat on a hot tin roof as he makes sure that doesn't cannon on to his stumps.

England are making hay while the sun shines. Ben Stokes has imposed himself on the bowlers. He's looked really fluent and is building a partnership to put the tourists in the ascendancy.

Hutton, Holmes and Sutcliffe were great players but you can't compare them to Joe Root who is dominant in the era where fielding is seen as more than something you do in between cigarettes.

Matthew Fisher talking about winning that first hour in his interview earlier. I think England will be fairly happy with those first 60 minutes.

Kemar Roach furrows his brow. He looks like a man who takes things very seriously. Not least fast bowling.

He presents a lovely seam position with his fourth ball which arrows in at Ben Stokes and strikes him on the pads, but the angle was taking it down leg side.

Stokes perhaps was a little surprised by the pace of that delivery.

Both batsmen here have eyes on a commanding total for England. From here, they should get 400 in a first innings for the first time this winter.

  7. Eng 280-3published at 102.0 overs

"Nice lengths Jayden Seales" chirps Joshua da Silva from behind the stumps as Joe Root gets himself in line to stoutly defend his second ball.

Seales, sporting a white watch on his bowling wrist and a sweatband on the other, bowls too full and wide to Ben Stokes off the penultimate ball of his over and is duly punished by another powerful drive.

Stokes was slightly uppish on that but it was clinically dispatched to the boundary by the England all-rounder

Kemar Roach has not quite been on it today. He strays on to Joe Root's pads and the England skipper eases does not miss those.

Root eases across his stumps and elegantly flicks a leg glance to the boundary for four.

    Classy.

  9. Eng 266-3published at 100.0 overs

Joe Root in accumulating mode at the moment. He nabs another easy single of Jayden Seales to move to 127 not out, off 273 balls.

Ben Stokes gets a freebie single of his own off Seales' final delivery of that over, flicking him off his pads.

Colin Kee: Re your comments on Root and Top 20 knocks, don’t just look at numbers. Hicks’s 405 is a great statistic, Gooch’s 154 is a great innings. Context, and influence on outcome, are more important than the number of runs scored (See also Dexter 70 v W Indies).

Two glorious shots from Ben Stokes.

A great transfer of weight from Stokes on to his back foot and he cuts a short wide from Kemar Roach's first ball, bowling round the wicket to the left-handed all-rounder, with aplomb. No chance for the West Indies fielders That went like a rocket to the boundary.

A couple of deliveries later and Stokes saunters down on to one knee as he powerfully drives a full one from Roach through the covers for four. No stopping that one, either.

It's been a calm start from England so far - they're just getting their eyes in. Root will have an eye on a big score today - the double hundred is there for the taking.

Is being in the top 20 highest scores really that important? If someone could score 150 in every single test innings then surely that would be better than the occasional 200+ score.

West Indies are trying to build some pressure by keeping their lines narrow. Jason Holder plugs away outside off stump and a flick through the leg side from Ben Stokes for a single is the only run off another tight over.

Kemar Roach into the attack and his final delivery is a short wide tempter for Joe Root, who thinks about chasing it for a cut shot but then pulls his blade away at the last moment.

Roach has his hands on head. That was a good set-up and he was trying to lure Root into his web.

England are trying to cement there situation in the game this morning. Joe Root and Ben Stokes are attempting to build a foundation.

Without getting too deep, and I'll freely admit this is amateur psycho-babble, I think as humans we're also more predisposed to elevating achievements in our own lifetimes, and diminishing those outside of them to fit our narratives.

Anyway, Joe Root picks up a single off a tight Jason Holder over, with another well-timed prod through the point region.

Rarely accounted for in the stats is the context in which a batter has scored runs. Joe Root has for so long been a one-man batting line up, and often essentially opens the innings. Imagine how much higher his averages and scores would be if he were part of a world-beating XI, regularly coming in at 250-2, with oppositions bowled out cheaply Not many of the "greats" in Test cricket have had to carry their respective teams in this way.

Back to the whether Joe Root is the greatest English batter debate.

Depends on how what criteria use to define greatness, and whether it's purely driven by statistics.

A great runscorer isn't always a great player to watch bat. Joe Root, is, of course, great to watch. I'm not questioning that.

But if he's to lay claim to be the undisputed greatest then I personally think he needs a couple more scores in that top 20 of big ones. Today might be the chance to get one.
