There is no way England would've liked to have fielded two pace bowler debutants in the same Test. But on the flipside, the West Indies batters will not have seen much of them, especially Matt Fisher. The West Indies analysts may be scrambling around of footage of Fisher bowling for Yorkshire now.

Matt Fisher gets a friendly tap on the shoulder from Chris Woakes as he prepares to bowl his first over in Test match cricket.

  3. WI 8-0published at 0.4 overs

A positive start from West Indies.

Skipper Kraigg Brathwaite is up and running and has very quickly tried to set the tone for the hosts.

From the second ball of Chris Woakes' opening over he whips one through point and then follows it up with drive down the ground for another four a couple of balls later.

Chris Woakes and Matthew Fisher will take the new ball for England.

It looks like Woakes is going to bowl the first over from the Malcolm Marshall end. The cross-breeze is blowing from right to left, so it'll help his outswinger to the right hander. Fisher will open from the Joel Garner end.

West Indies are using the light roller, which suggests they're concerned about the surface breaking up more. The ball definitely spun there more towards the end of the afternoon, but we'll see how England's two young debutants get on with the ball

  7. England declarepublished at 19:26 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2022

Joe Root has seen enough, so Saqib Mahmood is denied a chance to bat.

    Woakes c Seales b Roach 41 (Eng 503-8)

Next ball Chris Woakes is on his way back to the pavilion.

He attempts a filthy cross batted slog across the line - we've all played 'em - to Kemar Roach and Jayden Seales manages to avoid a collision to take the catch at deep mid-wicket.

Jack Leach is the new man.

He was having a complete swipe, but the ball that got Foakes did turn - you'd imagine that will become more pronounced as the match continues, and will also be at the back of Root's mind when he thinks about a declaration.

  13. Eng 503-4published at 149.2 overs

The new batter is Matt Fisher, wearing number 40 on his back, who is making his Test debut in this match.

Chris Woakes picks a slower ball from Kemar Roach and swipes it down for four dissecting the boundary riders.

Ben Foakes gets a busy straight single down the ground off Kemar Roach as the West Indies players continue to toil.

James: Honestly don’t think England should get too much more than 500 here. The bowling attack is going to need as much time as possible to get the first 10 WI wickets, let alone the full 20.

  19. Eng 493-6published at 146.4 overs

Veerasammy Permaul, who has figures of 1-118, is finding a little bit of turn on this wearing pitch.

Chris Woakes misses a flick to leg to his fourth delivery and it goes through the gate but is also missed by wicketkeeper Joshua da Silva and runs away down to the boundary for four byes.

Fellow left-arm spinner Jack Leach will be watching with interest.

  20. Eng 487-6published at 145.4 overs

Kemar Roach must have put something in his tea at the break. He tears in and bangs a short delivery which Chris Woakes has to duck out the way of.

    Good aggression from Roach.

A couple of balls later and Woakes gets a thick edge to one outside off stump and the ball races away through the vacant third man region for four.
