Not sure why people expect anything different. Root is England's only great player. Stokes is a good player who has great moments, not consistent enough to be win games regularly but does things nobody else can. After those two, and without Broad and Anderson, we have average Test players at best. It's not a combination than can consistently win.

All very calculating and controlled from Alex Lees and Jonny Bairstow to Alzarri Joseph as they work his shorter stuff around.

England dressing room look a little more relaxed. All of a sudden it all looks fairly comfortable in the middle.

There's 21 overs left in the day.

An interesting set of statistics on the TV coverage there breaking down the average number of runs scored in the morning, afternoon and evening sessions so far in this Test match.

It's 22, 13 and 72 respectively so now is the best period to be out in the middle if you are a batter. Jonny Bairstow and Alex Lees should make hay while the sun shines.

One run off that Jason Holder over.

England haven't lost a wicket for the best part of 20 overs. Bairstow and Lees have been stubbornly holding the West Indies up.

Adrian: candidates for next England captain imho: Sam Billings - very tactically astute and Tom Abell - excellent ‘fresh start’ choice ala SA choosing Graeme Smith

Jason Holder with a testing length to Jonny Bairstow who is calm enough to see off a maiden over from the West Indies all-rounder as he mixes sound defence with good judgment of when to leave the ball.

Alzarri Joseph preparing to replace Jayden Seales at the other end.

During the interval I spoke to a West Indies fan, Jason, who told me that the pitch is actually below sea level (the sea is a stone's throw from the stadium). He said local folklore tells you if the sea is calm, the wicket will play nicely for batsmen. But if the sea is choppy... they'll be dancing all over the place (The sea is currently very calm).

Alex Lees plays back with soft hands to Jayden Seales' fourth delivery and a thick edge takes the ball through the slips for four.

Despite England's fragile batting Lees has looked like something resembling a Test opener in this match, especially given the chaos which has been occurring around him.

Joe Root is chewing a cocktail stick and scribbling away in a notepad. What could he be writing I wonder...?

Ben Foakes sits nervously on the England balcony a couple of seats along, suncream smeared on his top and bottom lips.

Out in the middle Jason Holder beats the edge of Jonny Bairstow's defensive poke with his fourth delivery which which doesn't bounce. A nod to Holder.

His next ball jags back in and strikes the Yorkshireman on the thigh pad after he shoulders arms. Yelps of excitement from the West Indies slip cordon but that was climbing over the stumps.

Joe L: The biggest issue with dropping Rory Burns is not just that he's the best English opener but that he was also the only logical person that could take over as captain as well

Jonny Bairstow with with a swipe outside off stump then ticks himself off for chasing a wide one.

Seales looks set for a maiden but his final delivery is on Bairstow's legs and he glances it away for a single down behind square.

This is probably the first day of the whole series where England fans have been outnumbered by West Indies fans. It was the same when England were here three years ago for white-ball cricket. It makes for a great atmosphere

Jason Holder into the attack for the West Indies and Jonny Bairstow and Alex Lees continue to be watchful, cautious and placing value on their wickets.

Bairstow has been the slightly more fluent of he two, but probably taken a few more risks as well.

Jonny Bairstow and Alex Lees will be saying to each other, look at what's happened in this game. Tailenders and lower-order batters have come in around the 40th over when the ball is soft and been able to score runs. That will be their target. Get through and batting will become easier.

Jonny Bairstow is grumbling to Joshua da Silva, behind the stumps, about a door open and closing above the sightscreen which keeps distracting him as he prepares to face Jayden Seales.

Seales goes wide of the crease to Bairstow with his fourth ball and the England batter is able to tuck it into the leg side for a single.

Alex Lees happy to leave and defend the last two balls.

Zak Crawley is an attacking player and likes to go at the bowlers. We have been attacking openers be very successful but it is about doing it at the right time, to the right balls.

Within the space of 11 balls today he played three big drives in front of his body. He is on the move all the time and he hasn't got the base to be playing the shot.

I'd ask him whether he values his wicket enough. He doesn't seem to drop and ball into the gaps and get down the other end like most openers do. If he can add to his game we'll have a very fine player and he'll have a long career.
