New Zealand are in the driving seat at the moment. India are plugging away but without much success so far. It might be worth turning to Jadeja for a bowl soon.
Conway 43, Williamson 9
In case you're wondering, the Championship will be shared if this match ends in a draw. We'd actually all want to see a super over, wouldn't we?

Ashutosh Bajpal: Draw will be a win here for India.

I'd love to know who Virat was gesturing towards. It would be great if it was someone he knew. On India's last tour of England, he regularly made signs towards his wife in the crowd. There's Monty Panesar! The former England spinner is in the house. Maybe that's who Kohli was shushing.

That boundary will make Kane Williamson feel much better, he picked the gap perfectly.
In recent showings, 83-3 is very optimistic. Kane Williamson is feeling his way against Ashwin, gaining the confidence to sweep for four. Here's the wicket of Latham. What do you make of Kohli's gesture to the stands?

I would have no problem at all with England's openers reaching 70-0 in similar style in these circumstances. It's the 83-3 that inevitably follows that's so depressing.

The sun is still shining. It's almost like summer. There are 30 overs left in the day, but they have to be bowled by 19:00. I doubt we'll get them all in.

Jez Curwin: One of the blessings of kids that won’t sleep is waking at 4am to see the Blackcaps have dug in and going well.
Remember this moment. The sun is out and Devon Conway casts a shadow created by something other than the floodlights. Slip and gully as he faces Ashwin. It's actually quite pleasant in Southampton at the moment. A chap is using an umbrella to shelter from the sun, rather than something sinister.

That wicket ball from Ashwin was 5kph slower - it might not seem like much but for a spinner that's a big difference and that's what drew Latham into playing the shot.
So, Kane Williamson. Battling Kohli as a batsman, skipper and beard-wearer. If you remember, Williamson missed the second Test against England with his ongoing elbow issue. He faces up to Mohammed Shami with minimal foot movement and a defensive stroke played so late it arrives tomorrow.

Out of nowhere! It looks like Virat is giving a wave to a particularly vocal section of India support down below the press box after that catch.
Aggers is right. There was some definite back and forth between Kohli and the India supporters. He's pointing to the badge on his chest as Kane Williamson arrives.

There was a bit of a finger-to-the-lips, shush-type signal from Virat Kohli after taking that catch. I wonder if the crowd had been giving him some stick?
Latham c Kohli b Ashwin 30 (NZ 70-1)
After all that good work, you go and get out like that.
It's lovely bowling from R Ashwin, slow and flighted, suckering Tom Latham into a loose drive. Virat Kohli, at short cover, pockets a smart catch above his head.
How India needed that.

I'm dual-screening with the football. Weekends are for sport. Except F1. Both of these New Zealand openers have faced more than 100 deliveries. I think there are some England batsmen who didn't manage 100 balls in either of the two Tests against the Kiwis. Drinks.

Ben: We rightly praise New Zealand openers for batting they way they are at the moment in this test match - but would most likely criticise our England openers if they were batting the same way opening up… funny old game
