R Ashwin continues with his off-breaks, turning the ball away from this pair of left-handers. Rishabh Pant, behind the stumps, is underneath a blue helmet. No great noise in Southampton. The Kiwi openers are keeping the India fans quiet.

There shouldn't be any problem with the light for a while yet, despite a black cloud currently hovering over the ground. Patches of blue aren't too far away and the clouds are much higher than on previous days.

Oooofffffttttt! Could have gone anywhere. Tom Latham feels outside the off stump. It takes the edge, but is well wide of third slip. Not going India's way at the moment.

Thank you, Matthew. There are 47 overs remaining in the day - we can play until 19:00 BST.

Will the light let us get that far?

To put that into context, this session is starting 45 minutes before the Italy v Wales game kicks off and could still be going after the final whistle.

The India fielders are doing a little catching practice on the boundary edge. The evening session will soon be upon us.

It's been a dramatic day and the game needed that in order to have the possibility of a result on Wednesday.

India's seamers have created the odd ball that's caused some difficulty, but on the whole I think they have bowled a little bit too short - the New Zealand batsmen haven't been able to score freely but they've been able to survive.

It has been tight, gritty cricket since then. New Zealand's openers have survived but India have not let them get away.

New Zealand started that session with ball in hand. They quickly took the final three wickets needed to dismiss India.

Kyle Jamieson is going to be around for a long, long time.

Even though it's quite emphatically been New Zealand's day, you still get a sense that things could change very quickly.

Almost a wicket from the last ball before the break as Latham nervously pokes and misses.

Still, that's a very, very good session for New Zealand.

    An embarrassing moment there.

The crowd is behind India as the fielding side hunts a wicket in what is left in the session. Shami goes in search of a magic full ball and Conway flicks him for four down to fine leg.

    Such a good battle, this.

That's taken the shoulder of the bat, more surprising bounce from Shami's end.

2,500 India fans leap out of their seats in unison in Southampton as Shami finds the shoulder of Latham's bat. The ball loops into the air but agonisingly over Jadeja in the gully.

Kohli asks for more noise from the crowd. They respond.
