Superb question. India's current jumpers are very smart, though.
New Zealand are starting to feel this. Conway gets down on one knee, opening the face to slash Ashwin over the covers for four.

We've had a few messages saying someone like Dom Sibley would be getting criticised for digging in like this. Personally, I'd happy for The Fridge to grind it out all day long. It's not how, it's how many. However, if we're referring to his knock on the final day of the Lord's Test, you'd have to say the conditions that day were much more in favour of the batsmen.

I wonder if England's batsmen are watching any of this. Watching either team bat but especially the Kiwis. If we are not too arrogant to learn from others.

It's been bugging me for ages. I've just realised that Devon Conway looks like the actor Edward Norton.

Shami has been a handful, the pick of the bowlers for me so far. He's always coming at you, but with seam more than swing.
More bowling changes. Mohammed Shami, yellow towel in the back of his trousers, comes on for Ishant Sharma. No change from New Zealand, though. Defend, leave, watch and wait. Determined stuff.

It hasn't turned much. There are some footmarks that made me think 'oh crikey', but we haven't had any sunlight or anything to dry the pitch up at all.
India are ringing the changes. One over for Bumrah, then back comes Ashwin. Flight, guile, changes of pace. Devon Conway's bat is as wide as a barn door, though.

That one did swing and then bounced past the shoulder of Conway's bat. Six of them please, that'll get India back in the Test match.

There's a menacing cloud hanging over the ground, meaning the floodlights have taken effect. In the gloom, Ishant produces a snorter to Conway, once that bounces and leaves the left-hander from round the wicket. Ishant wants a review, but there's daylight between ball and bat. You'd have to be some player to edge a delivery like that.

Devon Conway is some player.
Conway 28, Latham 25
India dispenses with the spin of Ashwin and go back to Jasprit Bumrah, who is met with a couple of lovely strokes from Conway. First a sweet on-drive for four, then a solid push through the covers. I wonder if Conway would already be one of the openers in a World XI.

I feel like India have gone for experience with their bowling attack, so I think if Mohammed Siraj had just played a few more Test matches, he'd have been playing here.
It's about half three in the morning in Auckland and just after nine in the evening in Mumbai. If you're in either of those places (or anywhere else is New Zealand or India) let me know. In Southampton, there's a stall that says Cornish Dairy Ice Cream. I could go for one of those right now.

India have just got to hang in there, be patient and make sure they make the most of the chance when it comes.

Ashwin comes over the wicket, which is a minor victory for the Black Caps batsmen. Conway, who is only playing his third Test, remember, looks accomplished in defending around his front pad. Cat and mouse.

It's still very overcast, still plenty of grey clouds above us. The sun came out for about one minute, which we had to make the most of.
Ishant stomps in around the wicket. Latham only plays when absolutely necessary. For those of us used to watching England, it's like getting a glimpse of what Test cricket should look like.

How good have these two batsmen been? Their decision-making has been clinical, it's split-second stuff about whether to play or leave.
