India call for a helmet and post a short leg for Williamson. To be fair, he's pretty deep. Shortish leg. No house news. Phil and Kirsty make it look miles easier than this.

Mohammed Shami has woken everyone up after a slightly slow start. Great over.
Mohammed Shami comes into the attack, shuffling in like a man in his slippers. He starts with a beauty, swinging away from Taylor, who responds by driving through the covers for the first boundary in two days.

That was 35 dot balls from Kane Williamson between runs. It's the longest he's gone his career, in terms of balls, without scoring a run. His previous longest was 33 balls against West Indies.
Matt does like a moan, though.

Kane Williamson has taken his big sweater off. I'm staggered. Once again, it's freezing.
Another thought on what they could do if this game doesn't have a winner. This ground is right next to a golf course. Settle it there. Ryder Cup-style. Kohli and Williamson go out last. There's money in that idea.

Tickets for this match were only open to UK-based fans so this could be the first time many of those here, particularly some of the younger ones, have seen these players. Bumrah is getting a great reception at fine leg after each over.
There's the first run off the bat, Taylor playing a bit of indoor cricket to pinch a single on the off side. Indoor cricket makes me wonder why we've yet to discuss the possibility of playing under a roof during this match. Indoor cricket is a great game in its own right. Six-a-side, 10 overs. Get it in the Olympics.

Ishant Sharma is a tall bowler, gets the ball to move into right-handed batsmen. He contrasts nicely with Bumrah. It's different bowlers and different challenges for New Zealand's batsmen this morning.

Now the drumming starts. Taylor, yet again, is struck on the pad by Ishant. Kohli wanders towards the bowler to discuss a review, but that's heading well down the leg side. It's a leg bye. Still nothing off the bat in these first 20 minutes.

PitchedOutsideLeg: Trying to sell my house at the moment. Bloke in Hampshire has put in an offer, and I'm trying to call him to say he needs to go up just a tiny bit and it's a deal, but he's not picking up. He could be at the cricket I suppose, so maybe it's not meant to happen.....?

It's quiet in Southampton. No drumming or tooting yet. There's the odd shout from the crowd, but that's it. Williamson prods forward in defence, meeting Bumrah with a straight bat. Only one run in three overs so far, and that was a no-ball.

The bowlers will need to bowl a fuller length. Bumrah bowled a lovely line, got past the edge and found the edge. If India can get Kane Williamson out before he settles that will be key. New Zealand have their two most experienced players at the crease and India will be looking to get them early.
Ishant Sharma from the other end, hunting the big front pad that Ross Taylor likes to plant in front of all three. Taylor squeezes a straight one to square leg. If he misses that, India are singing.

Since the start of the 2016 summer, there has been 30 Tests in England with a positive result and only 10 of them have had more than 330 overs play.
Three slips and a gully for Williamson, who is wearing an armguard that's almost as big as him. Good from Bumrah, one leaves Williamson's grope outside the off stump. Another is edged, but it falls well short of second slip.

India fans massively outnumber New Zealand supporters in the crowd once again. "Boom-Boom-Bum-rah!" is the chant before the first ball.
No house news, by the way.
Play...
Jasprit Bumrah has marked out his run. The floodlights are off for the first time in the match. Cricket is about to break out.
