This, from a little earlier, is probably the best stroke we've seen since India started batting. We've got just over an hour of cricket left. The light is pretty good. I'm optimistic we might be able to play for all of it.

The scores are level but you could say New Zealand have a chance to win this game if they can manage to dismiss India cheaply. The wicket of Shubman Gill was a classic dismissal of an Indian batsman in England - he needed to play it with softer hands. He'll need to learn from that for later in the summer.

Jamieson has such a measured approach, a smooth action. It's not rapid - early 80s - but it's the swing and bounce that makes him such a dangerous proposition. Pujara shoulders arms to one that nips back, but it sails past the off stump. Time for a drink.

Here's the wicket, Gill playing all around that front pad. New Zealand have fielders on the leg side for Pujara, but he's still able to find a gap through mid-wicket to bring the scores level.

I asked the ICC about Kartik's earlier question (see 17:17 BST) about who has decided what type of pitch is provided for this neutral Test.

    Here's the answer...

"The ICC employs a pitch consultant and their role is to liaise with all curators working at venues hosting ICC events to ensure the best possible surface for local conditions are prepared.

"He has worked with [Hampshire head groundsman) Simon Lee here at the Hampshire Bowl.

"We do not direct ground staff to produce particular types of pitches, instead, as is the case for all ICC events, we request the best possible playing surface to be prepared for local conditions."

Southee is in to his seventh over. How many more has he got in him? There's a New Zealand fan in the crowd wearing a Colin de Grandhomme wig. Still quiet in Southampton. Tense.

Am loving this Test match, a real grinding battle between two very good sides and loving the commentary too, especially from Jeremy Coney.

Che Pujara is the new man. A significant obstacle between New Zealand and winning this match. He's facing up to Kyle Jamieson, who is delivering the ball from the height of the Blackpool Tower. He's struck on the pad, but that's quite leggy.

It was a straight ball, striking middle and leg but no more. It wasn't swinging but wobbled a little it. He encouraged Shubman Gill to play. A good delivery from Tim Southee.

    Out! Just out!

Shubman Gill plays all around a straight one and that is salmon trout. Tim Southee is the man with the breakthrough. He's served up a diet of outswingers, then suckered in Gill with one that would have hit middle and leg.

Here comes the hulking figure of Kyle Jamieson, starting with a no-ball, but then producing a full one that goes past the outside edge of Rohit Sharma. Jamieson took five in the first innings and he instantly looks a threat in the second.

I think India will err on the side of caution here. They are still behind and don't want to lose a wicket. Once they get ahead they may well want to accelerate while conditions are good. They certainly have the batsmen to go up through the gears. It's a question of how they want to approach it.

As usual, Jeremy is right. These feel like the best batting conditions of the entire match. As if to prove the point, Gill plays a sweet clip off his toes to the mid-wicket fence for a third two in this Southee over.

While there has been a bit of swing for New Zealand's bowlers, it hasn't been to the same extent as the first innings. It's more comfortable conditions for batting at the moment.

Excellent question. The Southampton groundsman has a dog wo appeared with great regularity when we were in the bubble last summer.

Still Southee, a smear of suncream on his face. He pumps his arms and kicks up his heels, still finding that beautiful arcing shape. Another maiden.

If it gets to the close tomorrow and it's a draw, it will be frustrating for everyone that there is no result when a day, or even a session, more would probably bring a result.

Boult comes round the wicket to Rohit. Curious how Boult hasn't swung the ball as much as Southee. Time for a bit of Kyle Jamieson? Shot! Rohit unleashes a carve behind point for four. Savage stuff.
