Burns was confident right away, but you can understand why the Aussies gave it such a good appeal.

There was a noise, but is it off the pad?

  3. England reviewpublished at 10:11 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2021

Burns is given out caught behind off Green, but they review!

  4. Eng 56-2published at 25.1 overs

    Burns 30, Root 5

That ripper from Michael Neser didn't change the plan as here's Cameron Green in to Joe Root - and the first ball is bang on target and forcing the England captain to push t back to the bowler.

  5. Eng 55-2published at 10:06 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2021

    Burns 30, Root 5

Rory Burns gets a leading edge off Nathan Lyon that loops worryingly into the off side, but it drops into space and they get a single.

  6. Eng 54-2published at 24 overs

    Burns 29, Root 5

Maybe Michael Neser is aware that Cameron Green's warming up, as he rips a beauty past Joe Root's outside edge!

Australia should bring Cameron Green on soon to see how Joe Root copes.

Oh look - he's warming up! It's a really good idea to get him on, he's troubled Root throughout the series because of the extra bounce he gets.

  8. Eng 54-2published at 23.3 overs

    Burns 29, Root 5

Joe Root looks a bit frenetic as he tries to cut Neser, under edging it down onto the floor and up into Carey's gloves.

  9. Eng 52-2published at 23 overs

    Burns 29, Root 3

Root connects with a sweep off the last ball of Lyon's over; he's looking 'busy' already but how will that abdominal injury affect him?

  10. Eng 49-2published at 22.1 overs

    Burns 28, Root 1

Turn and bounce from Nathan Lyon! Joe Root sweeps but the ball goes over his top edge and into Alex Carey's gloves above the keeper's shoulder.

  11. Eng 49-2published at 22 overs

    Burns 28, Root 1

That's a good over from Michael Neser that just turns the screw on England a little bit more.

Root doesn't look comfortable at all. I'd be going with a few at the body, then trying full to nick him off or hit the pad.

  13. Eng 48-2published at 09:53 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2021

So there was no lasting damage from the dropped catch, and now here's Joe Root.

That's a good decision. I would have been uncertain on the line. It was tight. Neser gets one by coming round the wicket. It nipped back just enough.

Hitting the top of middle, and he's gone!

  16. Postpublished at 09:51 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2021

Fair delivery, no edge, maybe high?

  17. England reviewpublished at 09:50 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2021

Malan is given out lbw to Neser, but he reviews!

That's the extra bounce that Lyon gets. You're unsighted at first slip, so it's tough to take.

  19. dropped catch

Malan dropped on 19published at 09:48 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2021

    Eng 48-1

Dawid Malan edges Nathan Lyon past the keeper to Steve Smith at slip - and he spills it!

    BBC Test Match Special

In another life, Nathan Lyon used to help prepare the pitch at Adelaide Oval. If he’d prepared this one to suit his own bowling in the fourth innings, he’d have been happy enough.
