We've all agreed the tactics when Steve Smith came in in the first innings were wrong - Ben Stokes banging it in short.

Captains can set fields that encourage bowlers to bowl fuller and be driven.

Joe Root is right. England didn't get their lenght right, even if that hasn't been what I've been hearing from the England camp and one or two of the bowlers. Root was being honest.

  2. 'Heartbreaking for Jos'published at 10:06 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2021

Joe Root, speaking to BT Sport, felt for Jos Buttler after he was out hit wicket when he stood on his stumps.

"It was heartbreaking to see Jos get out that way," Root said.

"Today he was a great example to the rest of the guys. That's the desire and determination you need to win out here. The way he has gone about it is outstanding."

"With the bat we need to make our batters to make bigger scores, apply themselves. You look at the second innings here we have to play with that mentality, We haven't done it and that's what is frustrating.

"I don't think we bowled the right lengths. We weren't brave enough to get the ball up there. As soon as we did yesterday we looked a handful. We have to better."

  3. 'I had fun as captain...'published at 10:01 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2021

Australian stand-in captain Steve Smith: "We weren't nervous. They showed some good resistance and fight. Jos played extremely well - it was an innings we haven't seen from him before, he's usually a bit of a dasher. He showed good fight, as well as Woakes and Robinson.

"We felt there was time left and all it would take was a couple of good balls.

"I had fun this week as captain and did enjoy it. The guys played really well. We were able to control the game from the first day as Marnus and Davey set it up with their partnership.

"So we were able to declare when we wanted and bowl where we wanted to bowl."

  4. 'We can turn it around'published at 09:59 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2021

More from Root who, despite the margin of defeat, believes his side can still regain the Ashes.

He said: "We have competed in patches. We have to do it from ball one for five days. The attitude today was brilliant. Was just need to do more of it. I expect us to have that mentality for the rest of the series.

"I have to be confident we can turn it around. I'm convinced we have what we need to win, we just need to be better. We can't keep making the same mistakes. We have shown in small pockets, we just have to do it for longer."

Jos Buttler has redeemed himself with how he batted there. He dropped a couple of straightfoward chances but that is unlike him - he's actually got a good record behind the stumps. He's taken a few brilliant catches too.

That was not a one-day innings today. That was a tremendous effort. It showed to me someone who is very determined to succeed in Test cricket.

  6. 'Didn't bowl the right lengths'published at 09:56 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2021

England captain Joe Root: "I'm fine. It was a rough day yesterday, but I feel better today. Hopefully I feel more like myself over the next couple of days.

"With ball in hand, we didn't bowl the right lengths. We needed to bowl fuller. As soon as we did in the second innings, we created chances. That's frustrating. We did it four years ago and didn't learn from it. We have to be better.

"Someone like Mark Wood will always offer something. Hopefully he'll be raring to go for the rest of the series."

Debajyoti Choudhury: Really good effort by England today but sadly not good enough Pensive face. Today does give a bit of hope though, and maybe just a few tweaks/tactical changes may make the next three Tests more competitive? Let's see what happen.

Bowling selection always comes under the microscope, but it doesn't matter who you pick if you still keep not getting big scores.

Former England captain on BT Sport

You cannot afford to make the kind of mistakes England have on this tour. They have a very tough few weeks ahead. At least they did show some fight. England have gone into this tour saying they were going to be one of the best prepared England teams, but they turned up in Brisbane with the wrong bowling attack. Where's the planning? These were avoidable problems.

At least England did show some fight, even if that's clutching at straws.

It's going to take a miracle for England to draw the series. For them to win it from here is impossible.

How can England come back from here and win 3-2? England at least showed some fight and hung in there. Hats off to Australia they bowled, caught and batted well. It's a mountain to climb bow.

All over. Australia go 2-0 up in the Ashes.

James Anderson can only fend a lifter from Jhye Richardson to gully.

England, belatedly, fought hard, but where do they go from here?

The last time someone faced over 205 balls in a Test match in Australia and was out hit wicket was Don Bradman against India in Brisbane in 1947. So Jos Buttler is in good company!

Night is starting to take hold. There's an extraordinary amount of catchers surrounding Stuart Broad. His eyes are wide as he ducks under a bumper from Mitchell Starc. The trumpeter has more energy than anyone else in Adelaide.
