With the departure of Buttler, Broad seems to have decided the best way to survive is to waft the bat at Jhye Richardson. He 'guides' a short ball aerially between the slips and gully. Always under control.

In some senses England have been completely outplayed, but it will be those little glimmers which will be such a source of frustration. It's been a tale of ifs, buts and maybes.

  3. Eng 183-9published at 09:32 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2021

The Adelaide branch of the Barmy Army has broken into song. Jimmy Anderson has fended off two deliveries from Mitchell Starc.

The JW: There is literally nothing more England than that.

    Jack Tanner: How very England.

Stephen Fenn: Batted so long only to stand on your own stumps. Only England.

A great round of applause for Jos Buttler from the Barmy Army. It was just as he sprung off. Is there anything else that could wrong in this Ashes? I didn't see a hit wicket coming!

  6. Eng 182-9published at 09:29 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2021

Buttler faced 207 balls for his 26. James Anderson is the last line of defence.

His back foot has just flicked the wicket. What an extraordinary way to go.

Buttler hit wicket b Richardson 26 (Eng 182-9)

    Unbelievable.

Jos Buttler has trodden on his stumps.

Trying to take a single from the final ball, he goes right back to Jhye Richardson, but so far back his right heel nudges the off bail.

Australia are delirious, Buttler is crestfallen.

    What a way to go.

  10. Eng 181-8published at 09:20 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2021

Mitchell Starc, loose of limb, has the ball. Stuart Broad jams a single to third man, then Buttler is surrounded by fielders. There's a weak chant from the home fans in Adelaide. Buttler scratches his guard. Back into his work.

  11. Eng 180-8published at 09:16 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2021

Here come the players, Nathan Lyon having a good chat with Jos Buttler. Lyon, friendly, is transformed from the man who wanted to "end careers" four years ago. It's a bit unsettling.

Andrew Savill: The nice thing about this team is that all our wickets are of equal value, all capable of anything from a duck to 30-odd. So being 8 down isn't as bad as it would be for other teams. Take the positives.

It's my birthday and I've got Covid Stephan, so I went to bed hoping for an England collapse and I'm shocked to wake up to us still batting. Not sure my nerves will take this today.

England have shown a lot of bottle. The batters have negotiated what's thrown at them, breaking it down into smaller bitesize pieces. Australia expected England to just roll over and they haven't. The dressing room language will alwaye be about going out and breaking a record or doing something special.

England have at least taken it to the final session. They have to show this determination when they get to Melbourne.

That's the question. England have shown their greatest amount of resolve when the Ashes are pretty much gone.

England have really got stuck in and you have to give them credit. Jos Buttler is the white ball king so 196 balls for 25 is impressive. He should have bagged a pair, but you have to give him some credit. He hasn't played his natural game but has done well. Is it too little, too late?
