Some ex-players were on the course this morning.

  2. Eng 86-5published at 47.3 overs

Jos Buttler is drawn into playing his first ball from Mitchell Starc, and the ball beats his outside edge. Once again, an England batter drawn into playing.

Next ball he leaves in a circumspect fashion before a determined dead bat into the pitch.

Chris Painter: How many times am I going to have to read 'he didn't have to play at it'? I think I'd take a comical run out now, just for the sake of variety.

  4. Eng 86-5published at 47.0 overs

Ben Stokes is surrounded by close catchers as Australia turn the screw with the spin of Nathan Lyon.

They want to be on the golf course this afternoon.

Mitchell Starc, huge grin on his face, celebrated that wicket by pointing to Steve Smith. A clear plan to get Ollie Pope out well executed by the Aussies.

He didn't need to play at that.

  8. wicket

WICKETpublished at 04:08 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2021

    Pope c Smith b Starc 4 (Eng 86-5)

An all-too-predictable start to England's day.

Ollie Pope dangles his bat out to one he could have left alone from left-armer Mitchell Starc, who had swapped to over the wicket, and Steve Smith gobbles up the catch like a Hungry Hippo at second slip.

It is going to be a tough, tough day for Stokes against Lyon.

  10. Eng 86-4published at 44.4 overs

Nathan Lyon, sporting wrap-around shades with white frames, round the wicket to Ben Stokes and the fourth ball of his over has the England all-rounder retreating into his crease and it strikes him on the pad. A half-hearted appeal follows - the ball had clearly struck Stokes' bat first.

Dan: No flash drives today - if it's not hitting the stumps leave it. Learn from Labuschagne.

  12. Eng 86-4published at 44.0 overs

Mitchell Starc drifts ever so slightly on to the pads of Ollie Pope with the penultimate ball of his over, uncompleted from yesterday, and he crisply clips the ball through mid-wicket for four.

Nathan Lyon loosening up to bowl at the other end.

  13. Eng 82-4published at 43.4 overs

Mitchell Starc bangs one in short-ish at Ollie Pope, who shows a stout defence first up before confidently blocking on the front foot a ball later.

If you click the play icon at the top of this page you'll be able to follow ball-by-ball commentary.

Unfortunately, it will not be the full BBC Test Match Special team - with those in Australia not allowed into the Adelaide Oval after a member of the broadcast crew tested positive for Covid-19.

It also means the ABC radio team are not in the stadium. However, an ABC radio team in Perth will be providing full commentary, including England World Cup winner Nicky Shaw and former Australia fast bowler Mitchell Johnson.

And, as you can see, we'll be having plenty of input from Phil Tufnell, Daniel Norcross, Steven Finn and Simon Mann.

    Steven Finn
Former England bowler on BBC Test Match Special

The most frustrating thing for England is there have been gilmmers - the first hour yesterday, how Burns and Malan batted. But it just feels like in crucial times Australia are coming out as winners.

As that oft-repeated cliche goes: it's the hope that gets you, Tuffers.

    Phil Tufnell
    Former England spinner

Everything seems to be going Australia's way and they are all over England. All we can look for is glimmers and flickers of hope.

There were signs of life from England yesterday. But then the one thing England could not afford to lose was Joe Root...and he fell in the last over of the day.
