It's not a 185 all out pitch. There is a bit in it but no real demons. It could've easily been a pitch you'd bat first on.

The series has been highlighted by small but important moments, like dropped catches and Dawid Malan getting out before lunch today.

Tomorrow is important. The pitch will quicken up which could favour the bowlers but if Australia dominate again tomorrow, the series is gone.

Pat Cummins won the toss and backed it up with his bowling but England did fight back through Joe Root and Dawid Malan before the England skipper gave his wicket away.

    Jonathan Trott
    Ex-England batsman on BT Sport

England have not had the confidence to go on and get big runs. It started badly for England and the Aussies got them all out for not many runs on the board.

We'll bring you some reaction from the England camp in the next few minutes then round up what's happened today.

Winning the toss was exactly what was required. Unfortunately for England it went the other way and that last ball just summed up their entire day, a good ball sneaking through the slips for four.

They've got to come back tomorrow ready to bounce back and try and find a way back in.

A thoroughly dispiriting day for England, not too dissimilar to Australia's harrowing day here in 2010-11.

They look bedraggled as they leave the pitch.

Think that possibly goes down as one of the most miserable days of this Ashes series from and England perspective.

Mind you, it feels like we've been saying that in every Test, right?

    Groundhog day.

  8. Aus 61-1 at stumpspublished at 16.0 overs

This time Ben Stokes gets the edge, but Marcus Harris plays it with soft hands and the ball races along the carpet for four.

    That's stumps.

A late flourish by England but categorically Australia's day.

  9. Aus 57-1published at 15.5 overs

Close! A beauty from Ben Stokes as Marcus Harris is drawn into playing at one on a fourth-stump line. There's no edge, however.

One ball left in the day.

  10. Aus 57-1published at 15.3 overs

Ben Stokes hangs the ball outside off sump in consecutive deliveries but Marcus Harris leaves them well alone.

  11. Aus 57-1published at 15.1 overs

Marcus Harris has strapped his protective gear back on and is ready to face five more balls before what will be the close of play.

    These batsmen, honestly.

I remember bowling and ripping an entire toenail off and carrying on. Don't need the physio for that.

  13. Aus 57-1published at 15.1 overs

    Nathan Lyon survives.

England will try to squeeze in another couple of overs, although Marcus Harris has been pinged on the glove by Ben Stokes and is receiving treatment on a finger injury which will kill a few minutes.

Stokes' over will probably be the last of the day.

That opening stand of 57 was the highest opening stand in the Ashes since the last MCG Test in 2017, when Warner and Cameron Bancroft added 55.

  15. Aus 57-1published at 14.4 overs

Nathan Lyon has emerged as nighwatchman for the Aussies. Can James Anderson winkle him out before the close?

It was that full length from Anderson, although it was a bit wide. I don't think Warner needed to play at it.

Some relief for England at last.

WICKETpublished at 07:19 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2021

    Warner c Crawley b Anderson 38 (Aus 57-1)

    My word, England needed that.

David Warner pokes at one from James Anderson which was angled across him and Zak Crawley in the slip cordon dives forward to take a fine catch.

Anderson turns and points to the crowd.

  19. Aus 57-0published at 14.0 overs

A short wide one from Ben Stokes and Marcus Harris gets over the top of it and arrows a drive behind point.

Harris fidgets at one outside off stump but the bite England's slip cordon are waiting for doesn't come.

  20. Postpublished at 07:15 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2021

Ben Stokes is doing his shoelaces up as Joe Root turns to him for a wicket before stumps in around 15 minutes time.
