If this were a three-Test series at least the misery would be over in a couple of days. Two pointless dead rubbers just because it's the Ashes.

Mark Wood gets one to spit off a length to David Warner, but Australia survive. At the other end, James Anderson is still searching outside off stump to no avail.

It's like a boxer, knocked out and lying on the canvas, only there's no referee to intervene and end it.....
Harry Boon, Bristol
Joe Root shuffles his pack and gives Mark Wood the ball, hoping that bit of extra pace can get that vital early breakthrough. Been far too comfortable a start for the Australian openers.
Wood gets one to spit off a length and straighten to David Warner which beats the edge of his bat.
More like it from England.

Strap yourselves in, Mark Wood has the ball in hand.

Just look at the confidence in David Warner. It's such a contrast from England's batters in the way he commits to his shots.

Phil Blundell: Warner playing one-day cricket for another hour could see them halfway to our total!
James Anderson, the yellow soles on his bowling boots visible as he attacks the crease, is nibbling it about just short of a length.
He offers him too much width second ball of the fifth over and David Warner rocks back a touch and biffs it for four
Australia appear to have made a decision to put their foot on England's throats in this session.

David Warner is looking to stamp his authority on Australia's reply, and flicks a delivery from Ollie Robinson over the England slip cordon for four. A risky shot, but the Aussies are in the kind of position where they can take them.

There hasn't been any movement through the air. If there is any swing, Jimmy Anderson can usually find it and he hasn't managed it so far.
Australia have come out with the intention of rotating the strike and to keep the scoreboard moving.
Australia certainly showed England the length they should be bowling earlier.

Adam Davies: If I were an England bowler then I would just bowl full. Regardless of how it went. Get what you ask for...

Only Sachin Tendulkar has played more Test matches than James Anderson now.
This is his 168th Test so he is level with Ricky Ponting and Steve Waugh.

I'm not sure Harris was expecting Warner to take off as he had!
That's not the first time Hameed has missed the stumps from close range, either.
Australia with a risky single off James Anderson.
David Warner dabs one into the ground and sets off, determined to get himself off the mark first ball. Haseeb Hameed has a shy at the stump but misses. That would have been close.

Josh Land: Good old England spoil my Christmas cheer.
Ollie Robinson gives Marcus Harris a nice gentle one on his pads first up which the left-hander tucks away for a couple of runs.
