Australia started the day on 126-3 and managed to add 290 more runs to declare on 416-8.

There was discussion at tea about whether they would up the ante and look to score quick runs to have a longer period at England but that didn't materialise.

This pitch is difficult so Australia probably had the idea of only batting once - or certainly only a short period in their second innings - in their mind.

What disappointed me England had a good afternoon session but then three overs cost 24 before tea. They walked off looking off a rabble and all that good work was undone. England's tactics were wrong. It's very frustrating when you work hard in that session, you want to make Usman Khawaja sweat on making his hundred over tea and England had Dawid Malan bowling. It was just giving it away.

Stuart Broad did have a good day as Aggers says.

He picked up four wickets today, to finish with 5-101.

Here are those five scalps for you to enjoy...

England were a man down for most of the day with Ben Stokes out after clutching his side. Hopefully it's not too serious. The seamers plugged away but lots of questions are going to be raised again with Stuart Broad not playing earlier in the series. He had a good day.

Zak Crawley's evening is looking very different than it did six or seven minutes ago. That might be lucky break he has needed on this tour. Something like that can galvanise the dressing room after a tough day. It's not an insurmountable total for England, but first innings runs on the board are significant.

England are 13-0 at close so trail by 403 runs.

First target for Joe Root's side? Reach 217 and avoid the follow-on.

    Everybody breathe.

    Let out a deep breath.

England have survived five overs and have reached the close with all 10 wickets in hand. Just.

    Eng 13-0

Haseeb Hameed and Zak Crawley survive. England survive.

  11. Eng 13-0published at 4.5 overs

Oooh! Haseeb Hameed defends again but an edge squirts off towards gully.

Hameed is playing with soft hands though, so it goes down to ground.

  12. Eng 13-0published at 4.4 overs

This is better from Pat Cummins. He is testing the defence of Haseeb Hameed now but the England opener is again able to defend.

    Two balls to go.

  13. Eng 13-0published at 4.3 overs

Another solid defence from Haseeb Hameed. He was half forward but he is solidly in behind it.

    Three balls.

  14. Eng 13-0published at 4.2 overs

    Solid defence from Haseeb Hameed.

    Four balls remain.

  15. Eng 13-0published at 4.1 overs

Haseeb Hameed is able to let the first ball go through to Alex Carey behind the stumps.

A couple of millimetres. A roller coaster of emotions for Zak Crawley.

  17. Eng 13-0published at 4 overs

Zak Crawley survives the final two balls.

There is time for one more Pat Cummins over.

  18. Eng 13-0published at 3.4 overs

Zak Crawley is up and running with a flick down to fine leg for a couple.

How must he be feeling right now? His Test career - or certainly in the here and now - is very much on the line in the remainder of this series.

    Wow. Wow. Wow.

Mitchell Starc has nothing behind the line and it is signalled a no-ball.

Australia were a couple of millimetres away from an early breakthrough.
