It's been a strange passage of play. Not really much happening. England trying to take wickets, and Australia just ticking along.

Just a single from Mark Wood's latest over.
Jim Maxwell ends his commentary stint by pleading for some shots to be played. I couldn't agree more, Jim.

Mark Hodgson: Only two English batsmen (Malan and Root) have scored more runs than Khawaja in this series. Incredible.

I thought Australia might have wanted a pop at England in the last 40 minutes or so but they just seem happy ticking along at the moment.
Two singles off the over. Australia are plodding along at the moment.
There are around 50 minutes until close.
Stuart Broad replaces James Anderson.
He's picked up three wickets today to add to his one yesterday.

Vinod: Watching Ashes from US prior to the Ind-SA match. This same Australia team got thumped by India's third string - just shows how sub-par England are.
Maybe a bit more intent from Mitchell Starc.
He drives for a couple through mid off, before pulling behind square for four. Jonny Bairstow didn't pick that up at all - he started running the wrong way.
Mark Wood gets a bit of a back rub/cuddle from James Anderson at the end of the over. Wood has given it absolutely everything.

Australia have been disciplined and have really ground England down. Ben Stokes has been a big loss. Australia's philosophy will be that runs in the first innings will be more valuable, even though it would be nice to give England a tricky period this evening.
It's been a day of steady accumulation from Australia, with Usman Khawaja at the helm.
Khawaja has made his ninth Test century in his first match in the whites for two years to put Australia on top.
Steve Smith made 67 a little earlier before he was dismissedd by Stuart Broad, who has been the pick of the bowlers with four wickets.
There's an injury concern on the horizon for England though. Ben Stokes pulled up midway through an over and, although he has returned to the field, he has not bowled since.

Australia may also think that it's hot and humid out there so why not keep England out there a bit longer and let them suffer.
Usman Khawaja blocks and leaves a maiden from James Anderson.
Nobody is in any rush.

Australia trust Usman Khawaja and Mitchell Starc to build a total and let their batters do the work now. But as soon as they get down to Scott Boland and Nathan Lyon they may well decide it's better to spend time bowling at England.
After a lengthy chat between Stuart Broad, Joe Root and the umpire James Anderson continues after the drinks break.
It is starting to get a fair bit darker over the SCG.

There's 18 overs to go today, and the scheduled close is 18:30 Sydney time (07:30 GMT) so there is a bit of conversation as to whether they carry on batting or put England in.

It's been a hearty effort from Mark Wood. Joe Root has arm around him and is saying 'you've deserved more than you have today'. Australia are well in control of the game here. There's enough in the pitch to suggest it won't be easy to bat on. Usman Khawaja has batted superbly.
In case you're just checking in for the first time today, England have taken four wickets today.
Stuart Broad has three - Steve Smith, Cameron Green and Pat Cummins - while Joe Root removed Alex Carey.

He reviewed that instantly. Mitchell Starc knew he wasn't out. You can't blame England for appealing.
