  1. drinks break

    Aus 384-7published at 127 overs

Mark Wood is thoroughly fed up. Before that delivery Starc had gloved - while flinching away - just over Jos Buttler.

Wood was again flaying his arms, pursing his lips and rolling his eyes in disappointment. He is giving it absolutely everything.

Time for a drink. The scheduled close is 07:00 GMT, but we'll be playing until 07:30.

  2. Not outpublished at 126.3 overs

    Yep, arm guard.

    Mitchell Starc survives.

  3. Australia reviewpublished at 126.3 overs

England and Paul Reiffel think Mitchell Starc is caught behind.

The Aussie batter reviews immediately and points to the arm guard.

I think 380-7 is a good score. The debate for Australia is whether they think they have to get their runs in this first innings, knowing you might find it more tricky in the second innings. Or do you put England in for a potentially tricky 40 minutes or so.

  5. Aus 380-7published at 126 overs

Back-to-back maidens for England as Usman Khawaja is happy to block and leave James Anderson.

Khawaja is up to 132 now. He's been very good.

Former England bowler on BBC Test Match Special

It looked a promising day for England at the beginning but Australia have pushed themselves into a position of dominance. England's bowlers are starting to become a little weary now.

  7. Aus 380-7published at 125 overs

    A maiden from Mark Wood.

He has been excellent and largely luckless in this series. It's fantastic to see his body holding up too.

Australia changing room update: Pat Cummins is in his whites. Alex Carey and David Warner are not. The fact the keeper isn't suggests the hosts will bat for a while yet.

  8. Postpublished at 06:08 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2022

Here's how England picked up the wicket of Pat Cummins.

It was greeted by boos from the SCG crowd, but it is fair enough, no? There is a bit of leeway in the rules around the technology.

It is an excellent ball from Stuart Broad. How do you play it?

Mark Wood has replaced Joe Root for England.

James Anderson is really trudging back to his mark now. He'll be needing a dash of whisky in the ice bath later.

  11. Aus 380-7published at 124 overs

    Khawaja 132, Starc 19

Oh, grumpy Jimmy Anderson. Well, more grumpy than usual. Usman Khawaja looks to pull away but gets a bottom edge and the ball just misses the stumps. Jos Buttler does brilliantly to gather.

Cameron Green is still in his training gear in the Australia changing room. The declaration isn't super imminent. We can - and probably will - play until 07:30 GMT.

    Alex Hartley
England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

It shows how Test cricket has changed for England. They would probably have taken Australian being about 370-7 knowing they had the batters to bat time and post a decent reply, but not now. Not the last few years.

  13. Aus 376-7published at 123 overs

A little bit of intent from Usman Khawaja as he swivel pulls Joe Root to the square leg boundary.

To be honest, it wasn't the best ball. He'd have been putting that away in the 23rd or 123rd over.

I think there's a message coming out from the Aussie skipper via the two drinks carriers.

  15. Aus 371-7published at 122.3 overs

A couple of Australia subs have just run out with some drinks and towels for the batters.

I imagine there was a message too.

    "You can attack now, boys".

  16. What have you missed?published at 05:59 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2022

If you're just joining us, morning!

Today has belonged to Usman Khawaja, who has made his ninth Test century on his return to the team.

Khawaja, playing in his first Test since 2019, is still at the crease, having shared a 106-run stand with Steve Smith, who made 67.

Stuart Broad has been the pick of the England bowlers with 4-81, but Australia are well set on a pitch that is already playing the odd trick.

  17. Aus 369-7published at 122 overs

Hmmmm I say that, but Australia are currently looking through a box of cricket balls. They are choosing their weapon that will leave England four down at close... (I'm messing, I hope).

Just two singles from Anderson's first over back.

  18. Aus 368-7published at 121.3 overs

I'm sure this won't surprise many people, but Nathan Lyon is padded up in the Australia changing room.

    The declaration isn't imminent.

  19. How's stat?!published at 05:55 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2022

    Andy Zaltzman
    BBC Test Match Special statistician

Usman Khawaja has reached 3,000 runs at the age of 35 becoming the fourth oldest of eight Australians to reach the milestone. He's younger than Brad Haddin, Shane Warne and Lindsay Hassett.

  20. Aus 367-7published at 121 overs

    Four from the over.

England just want this to be over. There isn't much urgency, mind.

James Anderson is going to replace Stuart Broad.
