This is an interesting move... if you were on 99 would you rather be facing Mark Wood or Dawid Malan?

England have brought part-time leggie Dawid Malan into the attack.

  4. Aus 305-6published at 109.0 overs

Usman Khawaja nudges another single to move on to 94 before Pat Cummins does likewise to get himself off the mark. The pair happy to milk singles off Joe Root.

Khawaja nails a square cut off Root's finall ball to take himself to 99.

England have been criticised for their bowling tactics but they got it spot on to Alex Carey, by drying out he runs until he felt the need to go big. Joe Root was the wicket taker thanks to a fine catch from Jonny Bairstow.

  6. Aus 297-6published at 107.1 overs

Usman Khawaja picks up length so quickly. He rocks on to the back foot to pull Mark Wood for four in convincing fashion. The left-hander looks a picture of composure, and doesn't seem to have a bead of sweat on him. A ninth Test century looks inevitable here.

Khawaja has looked better and better as he's gone on. England can't allow him to dominate this partnership.

There is a rough patch outside the left-hander's off stump which Joe Root can target.

  9. Aus 292-6published at 106.4 overs

Joe Root tosses one up hoping to winkle the stoic Usman Khawaja out before the tea interval but the Aussie left-hander is well set on 88 and squirts a drive which is cut off by the boundary rider.

That was a lovely, lovely delivery. Mark Wood is bowling quick and it is just that kick and bounce through to Jos Buttler.

Pat Cummins the bowler will be watching this thinking there is still plenty of life in this pitch. He averages 21 in Tests but I think he'll particularly enjoy this pitch.

  11. Aus 291-6published at 105.5 overs

A jaffer from Mark Wood as he beats the bat yet again. He bangs it in back of a length and goes past the defence of Pat Cummins. The pair exchange wry smiles.

Wood repeats the feat a couple of balls later and casts a glance skywards, before pursing his lips with his tongue. He's kept his discipline despite the frustration.

Skipper to skipper as Joe Root comes round the wicket to Pat Cummins, but the Aussie is circumspect and pads the Yorkshireman down and shows solid defence.

If Khawaja gets runs, it will give the Australian selectors questions. Does Travis Head come back into the team after Covid?

  16. Aus 289-6published at 103.5 overs

Mark Wood is back into the attack as we edge closer to the tea interval during this extended afternoon session. He bangs his third ball in short and like a boxer Pat Cummins bobs and weaves to get out of the way.

Two ball later he beats the outside edge of Cummins' bat.

England have kept a tight rein on Alex Carey and that frustration has shown. He managed a boundary over the top off Joe Root's last over but his attempt to repeat the trick costs him his wicket.

Down on one knee he tries to hoick it across the line but instead sends the ball skyward. Johnny Bairstow turns on his heels at mid-wicket and sprints to pouch an awkward catch.

Australia are grinding it out. They know first-innings runs are going to be crucial on this pitch with the uneven bounce.
