  1. Eng 54-4published at 29.2 overs

Another snorter from Pat Cummins, this time finding the edge of Jonny Bairstow's bat as he fends away from his body, the ball rising up on him, but it goes on the bounce to Usman Khawaja at third slip.

Simon Mahon: Slightly repetitive nature to this Ashes series whereby I wake up for an early shift to see England have lost more wickets than I've had hours sleep.

  3. Eng 53-4published at 29 overs

Scott Boland comes round the wicket and watches the ball go straight back past him for four, courtesy of a Ben Stokes on-drive. Lovely.

Boland nearly gets his revenge with a delivery that jags back into Stokes, finding the outside edge of the bat but dropping just short of the slip cordon.

Australia have dropped three catches today - their worst catching performance of the series? - and England are still four down for not a lot.

Sigh. Still. A life for Ben Stokes is no bad thing.

Oh, Ben Stokes might have been dropped there. I think he probably was. Pat Cummins certainly got to it but he couldn't quite manage the catch.

It is infuriating when you drop them off your bowling but it is so easy to do.

  7. dropped catch

Stokes dropped on 9published at 03:41 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January 2022

    Ooft, that's gonna sting.

Ben Stokes hammers a drive back at Pat Cummins, who gets two hands to it but spills it as he tries to land in his follow through. He had that, actually, but his momentum was taking him forward and he couldn't cling on.

  9. Eng 48-4published at 27.1 overs

For the third time in as many minutes, there's someone moving about above the sightscreen and stopping play.

Ben Stokes is grimacing quite a lot. He's not happy.

He keeps pushing in his side and you can't help but do that when you've got that injury to see if it still hurts. He looks in a lot of discomfort.

  11. Eng 48-4published at 27 overs

A thunderous cut from Jonny Bairstow is well stopped by Nathan Lyon at point.

Oh, a poor steward has had an absolute 'mare.

A beach ball drifts onto the field and stops play, and as he gets within touching distance of it, the ball blows away and leaves him chasing fresh air. The crowd bursting out laughing doesn't help, either.

  13. Eng 48-4published at 26.1 overs

Jonny Bairstow ges in on the run-scoring act with a push through point off Scott Boland for a couple.

England are galloping over the hill now!

  15. Eng 46-4published at 26 overs

    That's a shot!

Ben Stokes swivels and pulls Pat Cummins in front of square for another four. I don't know why we ever doubted them.

That was a nice looking shot from Ben Stokes.

  18. Eng 42-4published at 25.4 overs

    FOUR! An actual boundary!

Lovely from Ben Stokes, stepping forward slightly and driving Pat Cummins straight back down the ground and into the boundary rope.

    Oh, and it's a no-ball to boot.

Australia's lengths have been so disciplined so far - it is the sort of length that the batter always has to come forward to.

  20. Eng 37-4published at 25 overs

That run also means Scott Boland has figures of 1-2.

    Far too expensive.
