Eddie: The forecast for Sydney tomorrow and Sunday is absolutely horrendous. Can we make it through two more sessions today for the most undeserved draw of all time?

  4. Postpublished at 02:38 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January 2022

    Thanks, Callum. A noble effort.

It's not inconceivable, friends, that this could end today. That's how bad England are.

I need a lie down and a nap.

Amy Lofthouse is here to take you through lunch and the afternoon session.

When I return at tea will England be in their first or second innings? That is the question.

  6. Lunchpublished at 02:35 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January 2022

The fall of that wicket will bring lunch one ball early.

England have lost four wickets in an 80-minute spell to be 36-4 at lunch. They are 380 runs behind and still 181 runs away from the follow-on target of 217.

They have a lot of work to do. The series clean sweep is zooming closer into focus.

This is a common position for England - four down with the score in the thirties. Joe Root keeps saying we are going to learn from our mistakes. I'd be tempted to ask him when are they going to start?

  8. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 21.5 overs

    Malan c Khawaja b Green 3 (Eng 36-4)

Another one! Caught at leg slip!

It is brilliant bowling from Cameron Green. His extra height brings extra bounce and he knows it is difficult for batters to play, especially on a pitch offering assistance.

Dawid Malan had already been hit twice on the glove in the over, and he gloves down the leg side to Usman Khawaja, who takes a good catch, low and coming forward at leg slip.

  9. Eng 36-3published at 21.4 overs

This is looking horrible for England.

Cameron Green twice finds an extra little of bounce and twice he hits Dawid Malan on the glove.

That's Joe Root's second first-innings duck of the series. He began the seies with a duck in Brisbane.

  13. Eng 36-3published at 21 overs

Scott Boland is looking a serious find for Australia. He beats Ben Stokes' outside edge twice. He has taken two wickets in four overs, and is yet to concede a run.

Australia have bowled eight consecutive maidens. England have not scored a run in 48 balls and have lost two wickets in that time.

There will be time for one more over before lunch.

In his last 7.1 overs in Test cricket Scott Boland has taken eight wickets for seven runs.

Only against England could that be a thing.

Joe Root has gone for a duck! Scott Boland has got two wickets and hasn't conceeded a run! His charmed streak continues. England are in disarray again.

  18. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 20.1 overs

    Root c Smith b Boland 0 (Eng 36-3)

The pressure tells! Boland has 2-0!

This is very loose from Joe Root. He tries to drive off the back foot, but there's minimal foot work, and a waft results in a thick edge to Steve Smith at second slip. It is an excellent catch from Smith, because that was flying and it was well above this head.

That is England's first duck of 2022.

They are in disarray, once again. Deary me.

  19. Eng 36-2published at 20 overs

Make that 42 dot balls in a row. Seven maidens on the bounce.

There was a lengthy appeal by both Cameron Green and the Aussie fielders for lbw against Dawid Malan, but the extra bounce Green generates means it is going over the top of the stumps.

  20. Postpublished at 02:20 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January 2022

The fact that Scott Boland's nickname is Bazza is quite frankly shocking.
