Cameron Green is proving his worth to this Australian team. England have suddenly gone from being in hope to being in trouble. As it has been so often, it will be Root and Stokes trying to save England.

He got the length right. Fuller and just did enough to find the edge. Cameron Green has really relaxed into his bowling. It's a big wicket there - Crawley looked good.

    Crawley c Carey b Green 36 (Eng 83-3)

    Cameron Green has three!

It is full from Cameron Green and Zak Crawley, who doesn't move his feet, looks to drive back ground the ground and a tiny bit of movement away means it catches the outside edge and Alex Carey takes a good catch, diving to his right.

    Australia have taken control.

It has woken the crowd up. They're doing the Mexican wave. They have to time it right so it doesn't up behind the bowler's arm.

  5. Eng 83-2published at 22 overs

    Target 271

Just a leg bye from Scott Boland's over.

He has bowled eight consecutive overs either of tea. He may not have much more left in the tank, but while he's on the pressure will no doubt build on England because he doesn't give you anything.

Will it tell at the other end?

This is the match on a knife-edge. Joe Root is absolutely essential to England's hopes.

  9. Eng 82-2published at 21 overs

    Target 271

England captain Joe Root defends his first ball out to point.

The tourists have seen off spells from Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc but have lost two to the awkward bounce of all-rounder Cameron Green.

It seamed back a little back in and cut into Malan. It was fuller than the previous two balls and Malan got himself into a bad position.

Malan does get into a strange position to that short of a length ball. He was a bit cramped and awkward. There's still a lot for England to do.

    Malan b Green 10 (Eng 82-2)

    Dragged on! Sigh.

Dawid Malan gets in a bit of an awkward position, almost cramped, as he looks to defend Cameron Green back down the wicket. There is a little bit of movement away from Malan and a thick inside edge cannons into the top of leg stump.

England need 189 more with eight wickets remaining.

If England keep going at this speed, there's a chance of 100 to win tomorrow with perhaps five or six wickets left.

England haven't let the score stagnate. That's what you got to do - keep the positive intent. Australia have only bowled two maidens.

  15. Eng 82-2published at 20 overs

    Crawley 36, Malan 10

Just a Dawid Malan single from Scott Boland's latest over. He's conceded just 11 from seven overs. He doesn't give you anything.

We had more disruption behind the sight screen in that over. We've had a lot of that this series. What is so difficult about being sat down and not moving during the over?

  16. Eng 81-1published at 19.3 overs

    Target 271

WinViz currently has it at 52-48 in Australia's favour.

    It is close.

    Glenn McGrath

There were nine runs from that over. It was over-pitched and England have not missed out on those in this innings. It's been positive intent. I like how Crawley goes about it. He looks like an aggressive opening batsman.

  18. Eng 81-1published at 19 overs

    Target 271

We eventually get back under way and Dawid Malan gets a slice of fortune as a thick inside edge evades leg stump and goes away to fine leg for a single.

Oh! Lovely shot. Zak Crawley ends the over with a gorgeous cover drive away to the boundary.

Malan had cracked the first ball away too so England take nine from the over. They need 190 more.

  19. Postpublished at 09:10 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2022

Dawid Malan has tried two helmets on and he's not happy with either of them.

The umpires are starting to get tetchy because Malan is absolutely fine but time is being taken out of the game.

He looks absolutely fine. He's smiling and joking. Hameed has brought out a new helmet - it's even got the price tag still on it.
