When I lost 5-0 I still had that desire to be captain and drive the team forward, then I lost 4-0 in India and I felt done. Only Joe Root will know if he can take this team forward.

Mark Wood does deserve praise. He was excellent today, as he has been throughout the series, and thoroughly deserved his six wickets.

It is just fantastic to see him playing four Tests in such a short period of time too, considering all the injuries he's had over the years.

Australia have produced a side where everyone has contributed at some point. Not just in the starting XI but in the whole squad.

England had Root and Malan show fight in the couple of Tests. Mark Wood trying his heart out and Broad and Anderson at times. But other than that, it's slim pickings.

People care about Test cricket. They love Test cricket. They are entertained by one-day cricket, until it's a glut and it's too much and they have enough.

People don't have enough of Test cricket. People are shattered by what's happened again.

If this doesn't wake up administrators. to look at where the game it is and how unbalances the cricket structure is. If it doesn't ram home now then I don't think it ever will.

Both of those posts go a long way to explaining why England have lost this Ashes series 4-0.

It's a ludicrous decision to have someone in the dressing room coaching you, but also be the same person that hires and fires you.

More from Chris Silverwood on BT Sport: "It is encouraging that it has been seen that we need to equal things up again between red and white-ball cricket. That is the way I prefer to look at it. I want to think about how we move forward and how we make this work and provide opportunities. The guys that we've got coming through are clearly talented but it is about giving them an opportunity and a platform to go on and prepare themselves to play at this level.

"We sit down and talk about the team and we go with it. You plan the best you can but the fact is it is sport and cricket and some people will agree and some people won't. That is the beauty of what we do really but equally I am more reflective. I will speak to people who I trust to give me some honest feedback and I will be looking to learn as well."

England captain Joe Root on BT Sport: "You can try and dissect the whole game. There was a period where we were poor with ball in hand, we gave them a lot of momentum and we couldn't contain them. With bat in hand we didn't take advantage of starts we had individually. Today was really disappointing, there were a lot of soft dismissals.

"We haven't scored the runs to give our bowlers opportunities. We clearly needed to be better. You can't win test matches if you're not getting 200 runs in either innings."

"There are long term things that have to change but in the short term guys have got to learn quickly to manage different periods of play in the harshest of environments. I do sympathise with them but I think there aren't opportunities to do that at the level before."

"We need to sit down and decide what direction English cricket needs to take, and what direction English Test cricket needs to take to improve and improve quickly."

Enough is enough. This is the line in the sand. We can't keep going back after a hammering in Australia and say things need to change, and then nothing happens.

England head coach Chris Silverwood on BT Sport: "We've lost wickets in clusters and we've seen that again today. We were in a position today where we could and should have really gone on and won this and give us something to smile about at the end of this series. We have to look very closely at that. But I also think we need to look at why these things are happening as well. I'm sure that will be part and parcel of the review coming forward.

"There are numerous reasons why it could happen. A lot of people have spent a lot of time on the room in bubbles and you wonder how much that wears them down mentally. Obviously the schedules have been hectic with the various competitions and spending so much time on the road and locked up has been difficult but we can't use those as excuses. We have to look at various other things around the counties and whether the structure needs to change to a certain degree and look at how we're preparing out Test cricketers and giving them a platform to perform at this level."

More from Joe Root on TMS: "It's been a challenging tour on and off the field. Credit to the guys to put up with the restrictions and everything. The way we've played has been frustrating at times but I think we're better than we've showed. It's evident where we need to improve. There's not long until we're playing Test cricket again and an opportunity to right the wrongs."

On today's loss: "There were soft dismissals in there. One thing evident in this game is how session dependent it is in these conditions. They've favoured bowlers in this Test.

"It's the hope that kills you sometimes. A brilliant opening stand and then to lose some of the wickets in the fashion we did was disappointing.

"We can spend all day dissecting but it's clear where we need to improve. We need to be better with bat. We're never going to win scoring less than 200."

On watching Australia celebrations: "It's difficult standing there as a captain. I had a chat with a couple of the young lads and said remember how you feel. It's something which can harden you as a player and have a real influence on your career."

By this point England were just having a good old hack at absolutely everything.

It was like the final five overs of an ODI. Swing, swing and swing some more. There was zero fight or "you know what, I'm going to dig in here".

They lost their final three wickets for 17 runs to eventually be bowled out for 124.
