  1. ouch!

    Eng 4-0published at 1.3 overs

    There's some of that pace!

Tayla Vlaeminck drops it in short and there's a movement in and it plonks Tammy Beaumont on the helmet.

We'll have a brief delay while Beaumont is checked over but she gave Vlaeminck the thumbs up straight away.

Tayla Vlaeminck is absolutely rapid with the ball. Neither of these players would face really fast bowlers.

Double pace for Australia to start. It'll be Tayla Vlaeminck from the other end - she is quick!

Georgie Heath: Australia dropping Perry seems huge but it’s proof that the selectors are rightly looking at FORM rather than REPUTATION. She’s not been hitting the mark in T20s as of late. The right decision.

A sedate start for England, with Megan Schutt finding plenty of movement in that first over.

How many will England want? At least 130-140 you'd think.

    That looked close...

  7. Eng 0-0published at 0.2 overs

    A chaotic start!

Megan Schutt finds a little bit of in-swing and she hits Tammy Beaumont on the pads and goes up for lbw, but the umpire says no. It was probably swinging down leg. There is DRS in this series so Australia could have sent it upstairs if they wanted.

Beaumont tries to pinch a single and is then almost run out...

    Calm it.

    We're ready to go.

Tammy Beaumont has marked her guard and Danni Wyatt is ready at the non-striker's end.

It'll be Megan Schutt, who is returning after becoming a mother last winter, with the ball.

    Oh, wow.

The guy singing the Australian national anthem wasn't going to miss out on his moment in the spotlight. He doesn't half belt it out and goes for a long last note.

He brings a smile and laugh out of the Australia team.

    It is almost time.

We're just going through the formalities of the national anthems.

I've heard the Australia national anthem more times in the last four months - for the T20 World Cup, the men's Ashes, the netball in the last week and today - than in my whole life.

Good job it is a cracker.

Yesterday the ICC named their men's and women's T20 Team of the Year for 2021.

England had five players in the women's team, while Australia had none.

That means England should steamroll them in this series, no?

    Nah, probably not.

  15. England 'ready to go' - Beaumontpublished at 08:02 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2022

England's preparation has been "chaotic" according to captain Heather Knight, while opener Tammy Beaumont said it was "not ideal".

The players had to quarantine with their household members for two weeks before flying to Australia to try and avoid the Omicron surge of Covid-19 around England so they had to rely on family members to help with their training.

Have a listen to Beaumont explain some of the weird and wonderful things they've had to do.

  16. What happened in the last Women's Ashes?published at 08:00 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2022

The last series, that took place in England in 2019, was completely one-sided though and dominated by Australia.

England massively struggled with the bat in the three ODIs and lost them all to go 6-0 down in the series. Ellyse Perry was quite simply sublime with the ball, taking 11 wickets across the three games.

The Test was again the Perry show as she scored 192 runs in the game, but it was again drawn with both sides taking two points each. That meant Australia had already retained the Ashes going into the T20s.

Meg Lanning's side then took the first two T20s before England picked up a consolation win in the final game of the series. Lanning starred with the bat, scoring 178 runs in the three games.

  17. What happened in the last series in Australia?published at 07:58 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2022

The last series in Australia, in 2017-18, finished in an 8-8 draw, but Australia retained the Ashes having been successful in England in 2015.

Australia won the ODI series 2-1 with Alyssa Healy scoring 145 runs and Megan Schutt taking 10 wickets across the three games.

The Test finished in a draw despite Ellyse Perry making 213 not out in Australia's 480-9. On a fantastic batting pitch England were able to bat out for a draw, making 206-2 in their second innings from a mammoth 105 overs.

Australia then won the first T20 to retain the Ashes, but England fought hard to win the final two matches and at least draw the series.

Before play starts England will join Australia in a barefoot ceremony to acknowledge and pay respect to the original sovereigns of Australia and to honour the 1868 Aboriginal Cricket team.

Ahead of the anthems the two teams will also stand together to show their belief that cricket must be a game for everyone, and to demonstrate that they as players are against all forms of discrimination, racism and prejudice.

  19. 'We've got all bases covered'published at 07:54 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2022

Australia captain Meg Lanning; "It's a good chance for us to get out and hopefully get off to a really good start.

"Alana King makes her debut and we've got Grace Harris back. We feel like we've got a different look but we've got all bases covered."

  20. 'We're ready to perform'published at 07:53 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2022

England captain Heather Knight: "It looks a decent wicket and we'd probably have done the same. It might skid on a bit more under the lights.

"It has been an unusual and strange warm-up but we've definitely made the most of it - it feels like we're ready to perform."
