Healy st Jones b Cross 27 (Aus 67-4)

Outstanding. This is sooooo good from Amy Jones. She dropped some catches in the Test but this is absolute magic.

Alyssa Healy is dragged out of her ground by seamer Kate Cross' probing length and when she misses Jones whips the bails off in a flash.

    It is game properly on.

My word. Amy Jones with the fastest hands in the West.

    Is this a wicket?

  3. Aus 67-3published at 20 overs

    Healy 27, Mooney 5

Beth Mooney has come out timing it like the proverbial Swiss watch.

Anya Shrubsole makes up for that earlier fielding error with a fine diving effort to prevent a boundary.

It says a lot about the Australia team that if Ellyse Perry misses out there is not a panic as such, there a lot of bating depth there now.

  5. Aus 65-3published at 19 overs

More good hands from Amy Jones who whips off the bails and appeals for a stumping off Cross' seam bowling. Really impressive stuff.

Australia bat very deep remember. There's a long way to go.

  6. Aus 63-3published at 18 overs

    Healy 26, Mooney 2

It's Beth Mooney and her metal jaw at the crease now. She almost offers a catch first ball too.

What a tremendous ball from Kate Cross to get rid of Meg Lanning. England have been trying to do that from ball one to here and have got through the gate. Then a great first ball from Sophie Ecclestone. She's bowled some good lengths. Australia under a bit of pressure now.

  8. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 17.2 overs

    Perry c&b Ecclestone 0 (Aus 61-3)

HELLO! Ellyse Perry is gone first ball! She has just chipped a catch straight back to bowler Sophie Ecclestone. Ecclestone roars in delight. That is huge. England are right on top.

  9. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 17 overs

    Lanning b Cross 28 (Aus 60-2)

Bowled by a beauty! Kate Cross has got this to move a mile off the pitch and through Meg Lanning's gate. Big wicket.

Amy Jones dropped a couple of catches off Cross in the Test. They're both sharing a big hug now.

  10. Aus 59-1published at 16.3 overs

Oooof. This looked close. Straight after drinks Lanning pulls Cross to the leg side but not too far away from the diving fielder at mid-wicket.

Sophie Ecclestone has settled into her spell. Her first few deliveries were a little short but she's hit her lengths now.

  12. drinks break

    Aus 54-1published at 16 overs

    Healy 24, Lanning 23

A second economical if unthreatening over from Sophie Ecclestone takes us to drinks. Both sides are probably feeling OK about their start.

  13. Aus 53-1published at 15 overs

    Healy 24, Lanning 22

Wicketkeeper Amy Jones is up to the stumps to the pace of Kate Cross. Cross throws in a bouncer, not what I'd want in Jones' position, but she deals with that well too. Impressive.

I've been really impressed how England have gone about their plans. Especially to Meg Lanning - they've really applied pressure to her.

  15. Aus 52-1published at 14 overs

The first over of spin today costs three runs as Sophie Ecclestone is brought on. It results in plenty of work for Danni Wyatt out on the boundary edge who is panting through her in-game TV interview.

  16. How's stat?!published at 04:05 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February 2022

Meg Lanning has now reached 4,000 ODI runs becoming the third Australian and 11th woman overall to reach the mark. Only Belinda Clark (86 innings) has done it quicker than Lanning's 89 knocks.

  17. Aus 49-1published at 13 overs

    Healy 23, Lanning 19

Danni Wyatt is on the mic on the TV. She has just described Melbourne, where the next two ODIs are played, as the best city in the world after Stoke-on-Trent.

Australia are just starting to up the intensity again. Lanning skips down and hits Cross back over her head for four.

There's not a big crowd here but those in attendance applaud politely as a boundary takes Aussie skipper Meg Lanning to 4,000 ODI runs. She's the third Australian to that landmark in women's internationals.

Kate Cross has to not get bored, just bowling in the channel around off stump. That will be key for her coming into the attack.
