  1. Umpire reviewpublished at 8.1 overs

    Eng 53-2

Not what England needed or wanted! Buttler misjudges a reverse sweep and is struck on the pads. Sodhi appeals and the umpire's finger goes out.

He reviews but, judghiong by his facial expression and body language, I think he's gone.

Apparently all the online video call platforms have experienced a serious decline in usage since 2pm. What's going on??

  3. Eng 53-1published at 8 overs

Buttler goes for the orthodox sweep for a couple more and then takes a single to end the over.

  4. Eng 50-1published at 7.3 overs

Four! Buttler reverse sweeps Santner to bring up England's 50.

That wasn't the most cultured stroke we've seen in the tournament...

  6. Eng 46-1published at 7.1 overs

Malan plays a very un-Malan shot as he wildly heaves Mitchell Santner into the leg side for one.

England need plenty more of this from Jos Buttler...

  8. Eng 45-1published at 7 overs

Clever from Sodhi. Buttler advances down the pitch and the bowler changes his length, forcing Buttler to readjust and push into the off side.

There are some chaps in Sri Lanka kits banging drums and blowing trumpets in the crowd. Their team may not be here but they seem to be enjoying their day out.

  9. Eng 42-1published at 6.3 overs

Time for spin as the superb Ish Sodhi turns his arm for the first time. Buttler and Malan exchange singles.

Malan then tries to cut at one close to the off stump and could easily have gloved it behind.

Liam Livingstone is looking busy in the dugout. Is he preparing to come in next?

  10. Eng 40-1published at 6 overs

Buttler pulls Milne through square leg, the ball making a gorgeous, crisp sound off the bat but it's just a single for the England opener.

Malan is struck high on the pads and there's a half-hearted appeal from New Zealand.

Just the two runs and the wicket from a brilliant opener from Milne.

There were some entertaining moments in Johnny Bairstow's knock...

  12. Eng 38-1published at 5.3 overs

It was there to be hit for Bairstow but he just couldn't clear the inner field. It happens in T20 cricket.

Dawid Malan is the new man in and tucks off his hips to get off the mark. There's a brief stop in play as something (or someone) catches Buttler's eye behind the bowler's arm.

That's the breaking point. Bairstow drove low and reasonably hard and it was nicely taken by Williamson down to his left.

    Bairstow c Williamson b Milne 13 (NZ 37-1)

Yep, gone! Jonny Bairstow got a good amount of bat on it but it was driven towards mid-off where Kane Williamson took a smart, low catch diving to his left.

For what it's worth, it looks out from here.

  16. Umpire reviewpublished at 14:26 Greenwich Mean Time 10 November 2021

Adam Milne strikes with his first ball as Bairstow is dimissed! The umpire refers it upstairs just to check the catch was taken cleanly. But I assure you, it was.

  18. Eng 37-0published at 5 overs

Southee goes short and Buttler does well to fend the ball away and take a single. Bairstow prods into the off side for one more as England take eight from the over.

We're a quarter of the way through England's innings. They'll be pretty pleased with this start.

  19. Postpublished at 14:22 Greenwich Mean Time 10 November 2021

Can Bairstow capitalise on this bit of luck?

  20. Eng 34-0published at 4.2 overs

Wallop! A slower ball from Southee is smashed back past the bowler's head for a one-bounce four.

That patient start is starting to pay off for England.
